Why quit your job? Are you fired or bored with it?
If you are fired, too bad for you, you'll have to let yourself be supported by your wife and kids, waiting for the pension.
If don't like your job any more, and go away, and don't cry for you. Or is it that your boss pisses you off? In that case, all you have to do is apply for something else and get rid of your identity card, maybe some employer won't ask you about your age.

At 50 you are not old enough to recieve social security benefits. You can't get unemployment benefits because you quit your job. So the only thing you can do is go out and get another job.

well, first rule of thumb is don't quit one job if you don't have another lined up. I've been there and it is really hard to find another one when you have no means of spending the money looking for one. Have you considered going back to school? You could receive grants and loans for temporary support. That is what I did and it really saved me. I have to pay them back but, hey I will have my B.A. in Business Administration when I am finished. Good luck and stay focused. Also, you might want to join a church. Being around good people uplifts you and also might want to help you in your time of need.

They could have annuity or are tapping into their savings. Could be they had an excellent retirement plan and it was based on points rather than age.
They may have investments or are taking a reverse mortage on their house (although I think you have to be 65 to do that).
