Soluble Salts

1. The Na+, K+, and NH4+ ions form soluble salts. Thus, NaCl, KNO3, (NH4)2SO4, Na2S, and (NH4)2CO3 are soluble. These salts are products of acid base reactions.
2. The nitrate (NO3-) ion forms soluble salts. Thus, Cu(NO3)2 and Fe(NO3)3 are soluble.
Such salts are made by reaction of acid on metals.
3. The chloride (Cl-), bromide (Br-), and iodide (I-) ions generally form soluble salts. Exceptions to this rule include salts of the Pb2+, Hg2+, Ag+, and Cu+ ions. ZnCl2 is soluble, but CuBr is not.
Such salts are made by reaction of acids and metal salts.
4. The sulfate (SO42-) ion generally forms soluble salts. Exceptions include BaSO4, SrSO4, and PbSO4, which are insoluble, and Ag2SO4, CaSO4, and Hg2SO4, which are slightly soluble.
Such salts are made by reaction of metal salts with sulphuric acid .

Mix an acid and a base in the right amount. Then evaporate the water to leave behind soluble salts.

Use cations or anions or both that give you increased solubility. Almost all nitrates are soluble, as are almost all Group I cation salts (Na, K) and ammonium salts.

You can prepare soluble salts by:

1. Neutralisation - Rxn between an acid and an alkali,
e.g. NaOH (aq) + HCl (aq) -----> NaCl (aq) + H2O (l)

2. By the action of an acid on a metal
e.g. Mg (s) + H2SO4 (aq) ------> MgSO4 (aq) + H2 (g)

3. By the action of an acid on the carbonate of a metal
e.g. ZnCO3 (s) + H2SO4 (aq) -----> ZnSO4 (aq) + CO2 (g) + H2O (l)

4. By direct combination of two elements
e.g. Fe (s) + S (s) ---------> FeS (s)

5. By the action of an acid on an insoluble base
e.g. CuO (s) + H2SO4 (aq) -------> CuSO4 (aq) + H2O (l)

These methods of preparation all involve crystallisation
