The NBA rules for the playoffs now give the top 4 seeds in each conference to the three division winners and the next best team. The Bulls were slated for the #2 slot since they had a better record than Miami or Toronto (Detroit already had the #1 seed locked up), but when they lost to New Jersey and Cleveland won, the Cavs ended up with a better record and got the #2 seed. Chicago, being the best outside the top 4, got the #5 seed, but has home court in their series with Miami due to having a better record.

The way the playoffs are set up are the winners of the division plus the next best record take the top 4 seeds (according to record) and Chicago and Cleveland had the same record but Cleveland holds the tie-breaker over Chicago so even though Chicago had a better record than Toronto and Miami those teams won their division and are placed in front of Chicago..... This is why it was important for Chicago to finish ahead of Cleveland and win their last game because either Chicago or Cleveland were going to get the 5th seed and have to play Miami in the 1st round......The other team has a 2nd seed and an easier road to the Conference Final...!!!!!!!

They made this rule that 3 teams for the same division can't be in the top 4 so the team that has the worse record from the the teams goes on the 5th spot.I don't like that rule at all.

the reason they fell from 2 to 5 is because with the new nba rules the winners of each division automaticaly get placed in the top 4 seeds. so with that loss they werent winning there division. so they had to take the 5th seed.
