I'm not understanding your homework problem, but here's a shot.

Squared means multiply the same number by itself. So, take 4*4 first, then multiply that by 3. Then add 3 and subtract 1. You don't get 74 with this, so I know I'm missing something from your homework, but that is what squared means.

If you are solving for x, and the question is 3+4squared *x*3-1=74, then subtract 3 and 1 from each side. Get 16*x*3=70.
16 is 4 squared. Divide both sides by 48 (16*3) and you get x=1..... (rounded down).

Squared means you multiply the number which is squared by its self. (you could think of finding the area of a square if it helps).
BODMAS gives the order of operations so you work out 4squared first the multiply by 3 then add 3 then subtract one

4 x 4 = 16

16 x 3 = 48

48 + 3 = 51

51 - 1 = 50 Which plainly is not 74 I have experimented a bit with different orders but can't get 74

This question sounds like it's trying to steer you into either elementary Pythagoras or correct use of brackets. The question should be written as:
(3squared + 4squared) x 3 - 1 = 74
which is worked out as:
( 3x3 + 4x4) x 3 - 1
= (9 +16) x 3 -1
= 25 x 3 -1
=75 - 1 = 74

Squared means multiplied by itself so do the sum like this; three squared plus four squared is 9+16=25, twenty five times three =75, 75-1=74

squared means to the power of 2
so, if 4 is squared it means = 4^2 = 4*4 = 16

Squared ( or raised to the power of TWO) means you have to MULTIPLY the number by ITSELF TWO TIMES
Examples
1) five squared = 5^2 = 5 times 5 = 25
2) x^2 (x raised to the power of 2) = x times x

sqared means to multiply a number by itselft. it is an exponent sort of thing.... it is written with a small two on top of a number. for example, 8 squared is 64 (8 times 8 = 64)
