A very good question?
If we are to legislate death we should understand the process.
On average, there are 3,500 individuals (Average age 28, as young as 18) awaiting it
At any given moment, the legality of this method is in limbo in the 30+ States and the Federal Government that authorize it.(Texas 4 times more than any other)
The "cocktail" consisting of three intravenous drugs 1.A barbiturate to cause unconsciousness ( this is not an anesthetic) 2. A muscle paralyzing agent that prevents breathing and "masks" major seizures. 3. a highly concentrated potassium salt that(theoretically ) disrupts the normal electrical activity of the heart: It is known to burn tremendously, all along the course of the blood supply that it is injected into.
It's legality is presently in chaos due to the number of 8Th Amendment Appeals (Cruel and unusual punishment ) and many States, presently have issues "Stays"not only re: Lethal injection but the Death Penalty, generally: This due to the proven amount of legal error in convictions (up to 20 % of cases). The U.S. Supreme Court says that we can do this to no one youngerthan 18 y.o. although one Stae has attempted to authorize this for a 17 year old.
As to "painlessness": This is not the common "general anesthesia" that we have benifit of, for surgery , a recent, Florida, execution, took over 1/2 hour of writhing, obvious pain, and all of the body contortions that accompany a very painfull death.
Because the American Medical Association bars Physicians from participating ( As does the American Nursing Association) as "unethical practice", these executions are administered by whomever the particular State deems capable (usually paramedics).
Because we are not the object/injectee, we do not know how the end comes.

The injection is a mix of pain killers and a chemical which induces a heart attack. More specifically, it simply makes the heart stop beating while the criminal's thoughts and feelings are sent into a numb state. The drugs used prevent the criminal from feeling ANY pain during the process.

So the criminal first slips into a perfectly comfortable state like being on a absolute high while his/her body simply slowly stops functioning. It is less painful to die by lethal injection than by natural causes.

I know this because I have witnessed several. They seem to be in absolute Nirvana. To me, it is sad since these people committed some of the most disguisting acts possible but get put down in a less painful way than you or I will when our time comes.

They give one injection first that puts the person to sleep (coma-like), similar to surgery, then a 2nd drug to stop the heart.
Death results from the heart stopping and no oxygenated blood reaching the brain and other organs. 10-15 minutes until technical death, but supposedly the person feels nothing at all.
