Here it is in a nutshell. There are two conferences, East and West. The top eight teams in each conference play each other in a head to head series, the match-ups determined by the team's records. The top seed will play the 8th seed, the 2nd seed plays the 7th and so on. They keep on eliminating eachother until there are two teams left, one from the East, one from the West. These two play eachother in the NBA finals to determine who's the champ. The series is best of seven. Simple enough?

NBA for Dummies:

- All the teams that are located in the East of the U.S are the "Eastern Confrence"

- All the cities that are located in the West of the U.S are the "Western Confrence"

- There are 30 teams in the NBA

- There are 82 games in the Season

THE PLAYOFFS:

- After the Season ends, the 16 best teams (8 in the West, 8 in the East) "Playoff" in hopes of winning the NBA Championship... This is known as the "NBA Playoffs"

- Teams are ranked (seeded) in order of their season record... that is, the more games you win in the season, the higher you are ranked.

- The higher you are seeded, the easier your schedule is for the playoffs... e.g.
1 Seed (best team) VS 8 Seed (worst team),
2 Seed (second best team) VS 7 Seed (second worst team) etc..

16 teams play-off. Each time a series is won, the loser is eliminated and series are best 4/7.

So, after every series the team total reduces from 16 to 8 to 4 to 2 (in the finals).

The only slightly confusing aspect to this is that instead of referring to the overall league-wide situation, they refer to the western, or eastern, conference (which splits it in half).

In other words, the round of 16 (the first round), is really the round of 8 (quarterfinal) as it relates to its specific conference.
