In Jesus' day, there was not a standardized dating system like there is today. This is how Luke identified the year John the Baptist began preaching to set the stage for Jesus' ministry-

Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene, Luke 3.1

He didn't know, nobody did, as the counting system came much later, even then it was the late 1880's before an average person had any idea what year it was, or even cared,
