The term for that is Theistic Evolution.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theistic_evolution
It basically states that the Universe developed exactly the way scientist have been saying, but that the guiding force behind it is God.
Its a logical theory for anyone who is a theist. Standard Creationism simply goes against evidence and science.

God could have done it that way if He wanted to. The problem is that the fossils do not show evolution. They actually show complex creatures appearing suddenly during the cambrian explosion with no transitional forms before them. Darwin was aware of that problem. He said "they're out there by the millions(transitional forms, that is).....you should be stumbling over them as you walk out your back door". That's a quote from Darwin. His explanation as to why they hadn't found them yet was that archeology was in it's infant stages at that time. He predicted that after he was dead they would find them by the millions. They should be there. Transitionals were on this earth longer than the species we see today. But here we are 150 years later and they still haven't found any. Stephan J. Gould, who was a Harvard paleontolgist and one of the top evolutionists in the world until he died a few years ago said this:"there's a trade secret among the paleontologists of the world.....namely, that the transitional forms don't exist". My question would be...why is it a trade secret? If the evidence doesn't show evolution why don't they tell the world. It's no surprise that Gould and Niles Eldridge eventually gave up on darwinian evolution and started a new theory called 'Punctuated Equilibrium', a theory which Richard Goldschmidt(also an evolutionist) called the 'hopeful monster theory' a name he gave to it in derision. He descibed it by saying that a reptile once laid an egg and, VIOLA, out popped a bird. If you believe that, I've got some swampland I'd like to sell you....ON PLUTO. There is no evidence for evolution. Why should we be trying to find a compromise between that and the bible?

I am a Christian and I believe God created the world. I do not know if He did this throught catastrophism, through evolution or through a combination. I find the whole question fascinating because I have an inquiring mind and I love to know the truth, be it moral or scientific. Anyway, I think it is viable what you have written and I think evolution is viable. We can see it happening around us. The lower life forms e.g. viruses evolve very quickly. We can see what happens with genetics too.
I have never thought about the idea of Adam's rib in the way you mentioned it. Thank you :-). I think it is a great explanation. I have learnt over the years since becoming a Christian that God always speaks to people on terms they will understand. God certainly could not have told the ancient Hebrews, or even people at the turn of the twentieth century, about DNA. Perhaps the word "rib" had a specific importance in ancient culture in the sense of it was seen as being someone's essence. An analogy of sorts to show how different cultures can be is found in (traditional) Zulu culture. The liver is seen as very important rather than the heart, so if you love someone, you have given them your liver, not your heart. Also, some of the ancient peoples used to give one another their shoes to seal a deal, and sometimes even walk between an animal that had been cut in two to seal a deal. We certainly do not do that in "modern" society. I just love your explanation of Adam's rib. I have been thinking about it for some time. Thank you :-).
In summary, I do believe that what you are saying is viable.

To "create" means to put and keep something in existence. God is Creator because He puts and sustains everything in existence. He is the maker and final goal of everything that exists, all things visible and invisible.
The truth of creation means that God's loving creativity builds into each of us a meaning, purpose and destiny which nothing can take away from us.
Does the Genesis account of creation contradict the scientific theory of evolution? No. In affirming that God is the ultimate cause of all that exists, Genesis gives its ultimate meaning and purpose - "Why" the world exists. It does not explain "how" the physical world came to be in its present condition, which the theory of evolution tries to explain.
The Catholic Church does not have an official position on whether various life forms developed over the course of time. However, it says that, if they did develop, then they did so under the impetus and guidance of God, and their ultimate creation must be ascribed to him.
Concerning human evolution, the Church has a more definite teaching. It allows for the possibility that man's body developed from previous biological forms, under God's guidance, but it insists on the special creation of his soul.
Peace and every blessing!

if god could create the solar system and the earth and all the elements and the atmosphere and the water, why couldn't he just create the animals himself? why did he have to let them evolve from a single celled organism over which he had no real control over?

The main problem I have with this, separate from any technical issues or evidence, is that it would appear to mean that the divine "engineered in" all the things that on a non-theistic approach merely "happen" but, if coupled with intent, amount to callousness and cruelty. Parasitic wasps arranging for their young to eat caterpillars alive, mass extinctions of dinosaurs to provide new ecological niches...
The whole of "nature red in tooth and claw".
Appealing to "The Fall" is a resource only for full-blown creationists.

It is worng to say that God created man from the animals and it is against the bible belief I beliive the bible that man was created from the dust and will return to dust and the first woman was taken from the ribs of the man.
What is being signified there is that the woman should be loved and cared by the man because the woman came from his own flesh and mankind must have to love his flesh body. So love the woman as you love yourself , as man. do not inflict injuries to her person..
In your concept we are admitting that man evolve from animals. No way.

You have to be careful to watch the monkeys close. They will try to evolve on you. Watch them close don't let them evolve or then they will have proof. Some people say elves evolve from monkeys but I don't think so. I think they are just dwarfs or little people. They don't like for people to know they evolved. Just look at the Pygmy people Whole African tribes of people.
