I have been to may churches in my life and I have to say religious music thats in church seems pretty bad. Those hymns that are sung sound more like funeral music than anything. I think even if I was a believer I couldnt go to church because I couldnt stand to listen to the horrid music. I hear it on Sunday worships on TV as well. no one seems to sing real music. I mean seriously would you want to listen to that in your car or at home?
To me music is a wonderful thing and a great tool to tap into emotion, so what is the music style at your church? Is it ok with your church to tap into some more modern music themes or do you stick with the more traditonal hymns? And if your church is stuck with the old stuff anyone know why?

It's terrible - it sounds like country and western music sung badly - out of place in a catholic church. I'm more for the hymns.

I think there's a great variety of Christian music so everyone should find something that pleases them. Personally I grew up hearing the traditional songs in church and I love them all. As I became more rooted in the faith, I became a great fan of Southern Gospel music. Then as I got older, I learned to appreciate the more modern music too. I hope I can continue to embrace the new while never letting go of those wonderful old hymns I learned as a child. There's such joy in praising the Lord through songs and I think perhaps your issue may be that you aren't " a believer" so you aren't using the music to praise God. I hope you will find the Lord while there is still time. It might change the way you think about the music.

At my church we do two types of services -one is very contemporary with electric guitars and drums, the other is more traditional with hymns, choir and pipe organ. We have different styles because some people relate better to one or the other. You do not have to sing hymns like a dirge, you can make them more upbeat -even as a rock or a hip-hop song.
Our contemporary worship band sometimes will do an all-acoustic set of our rock tunes (sort of like MTV Unplugged) with acoustic guitars, bass, violin, tin whistle and dulcimer. Some of these services are almost Celtic in style.

I think you should be able to find a church in your area that plays a style a music that would help you worship God. But remember, worship music is not about pleasing you, but about giving Him praise. God is the Audience, so He is honored by many styles not just one. What honors Him most, is a song sung to Him joyfully, from your heart.

I don't know what style of music you like best, but there are worship bands doing nearly every style you can imagine.

At my church we sing current songs that are placed on a screen to read. Some songs to name a few are:Open the eyes of my Lord
Shout to the Lord
Lord I lift Your name on High
My God is an Awesome God
I suggest if you don't like the song selection at your church, you could buy a CD. I accidental bought the ones above by a different artist than the original, but still like them So do my teen aged grandchildren. There is also a church in my area that has 2 morning services. One sings the old hymns and the other new. I admit that I miss some of the old hums that I grew up with but I like change as well and this music makes you feel like jumping and dancing for the Lord for you are so full of spirit.
I hope you become a believer and this music might inspire you to do so. Good luck!

Makes no difference to me one way or the other. There's a whole book of church music that I really love - The Baptist Hymnal. On the other hand, I've got a sizable collection of everything from Southern Gospel to Contemporary to "Urban" Gospel to Rap. As long as it's about my Saviour, it's inspiring.

Going to church isn't about the music, it's about the Composer. If you're in church (any church) just because the music raises your heartrate, you're there for the wrong reason. This has gotten to be such a dividing issue in many churches, that alot of pastors have nixed the music alogether, just to get people to focus on Christ instead of some emotional experience cause by a good bassline.

Each church has personality just like her members do. Keep looking for a church who is most compatible with your upbringing, preferences, and past experience.
Usually churches with a large number of congregation offer different style of worship services. If a church has a music minister, you can contact her or him before you visit.
Music has special place in church. I hope you can experience wonderful church music soon.

I don't attend religious services anymore. When I was raised Catholic, I wasn't impressed by the music, which was solemn, constrained, and uninspiring. Today I listen to contemporary rock and dance. Those are much better, and the spiritual/emotional effect is more palpable.

EDIT: I do admit that some of the early Gregorian chants are quite gorgeous. If I were to listen to a certain form of religious music, that would be it.

attempt a diverse church. i don't love low church Protestant track because it truly is so effortless/pop-sounding/corny. The rock bands in church border on irreverent to me. I desire the deeper extra chic hymns of the Catholic Mass. Songs I take excitement in: the following i'm Lord, Litany of Peace, Shepherd me oh God, Glory and praise to our God, carry severe the go, All are Welcome, Christ be our mild, Be no longer Afraid, city of God, Sing a sparkling track unto the Lord

It's interesting that Rock N Roll has roots in old time Gospel. To this day many popular singers learned to sing in church.

Which music, according to you, is "real" music? Would everyone else agree? Obviously, music is a cultural thing. People get together and sing to the music they enjoy. If you don't like it, you can go to another church.

Oh I forgot. You don't go to church.

The whole reason for church is to worship God, not worry about the music. If it's bad, suggerst something to the priest.
