How do I apply for non profit status?

Question

We have 7 or more members for UNITED WE STAND in support of the troops, and desperately need non profit status. We would dare to dream of it before the fourth of July, but understand it takes 6 months. Or group is four years old.

I am in the state of Hawaii.

You do not really need an attorney to do this - but you will have to do some independant research on Forming a Non Profit Organization.

To earn Federal Tax Exempt status - you have to be certified as a 501c(3) organization by the Internal Revenue Service. There is a filing fee and you must meet certain criteria.

NOLO has an awesome book that will walk you through the process and give you some background info.

You have to obtain a non-profit tax ID number from the IRS first. When I did it years ago, I was able to call the IRS directly and get it on the phone. Now, I don't know if you can still do that or there may be a form on their website www.irs.gov that you need to fill out. It wouldn't hurt to call and find out.
