Prior to birth, it is not possible to predict the symptoms that an individual with Down syndrome will develop. Some problems are present at birth, such as certain heart malformations. Others become apparent over time, such as epilepsy.
These factors can contribute to a significantly shorter lifespan for people with Down syndrome. One study, carried out in the United States in 2002, showed an average lifespan of 49 years, with considerable variations between different ethnic and socio-economic groups.

The average is in the 50s. It has gone up dramatically in the last few decades because of improvements in treatment of the conditions that can shorten lifespan in people with Down sydnrome, mainly heart conditions (at birth) and Alzheimer's disease.

Nowadays, they tend to easily live into their 50s or 60s. It depends on the degree of heart defect present, which most of them have to some degree.
Some, of course, die younger than that, especially in countries without good health care.

Generally they live well into their thirties. They do have some breakthrough drugs that would allow a longer life span but it has been years since I have researched the subject.
