Sorry to answer this, I'm not a guy. But, I've been through that before. There are four possibilities:
1.) Although you did not have sex, you still fooled around and he still wants some a-s-s.
2.) He's a sensitive guy and if he has been with you long he generally wants you around and genuinely still wants to be friends with you.
3.) He's afraid you might cry if he cut you off cold turkey.
4.) He's greedy. Run the other way fast.
Alright, so what you can do is not spend time being puzzled and just go with the flow. Note: If you guys ever hang out again, under no circumstances put out - without having a chat with him. You'll turn out to be friends with benefits if you do put out and I'm not sure you can handle that if you are already analyzing him casually chatting with you.
Bottom line: If he still likes you and he can't be upfront with you and it's been a year - he's not worth losing time thinking about and he's a p-u-s-s-y. So, get another hobby. Also, general rule - 3 years difference or less - for your first kiss at least!
Good Luck.

Sometimes its the memories we miss. If we shared alot of special memories with a girl then even though we may have found someone else we still miss the memories we had with an ex. I still talk to some of my exs from time to time cuz we are still friends and we both have moved on.

Don't stick with him. You know why? Because everything will hit you right on the face. I had this same situation, but it was my girlfriend and her ex. Her ex tried to be "friends" with her again... but right behind my back he was trying to marry her... that's right marry her. That idiot. I gave him a piece of my mind and told him to *freak* off. After a lot of warnings and public announcements about his stupidity, he finally stayed away from my girlfriend and I. Thank goodness. Because I would've literally beat the crap out of him. So if you are planning to have a boyfriend anytime soon, you better think about it. Would you want a man who is talking to an ex? It would be weird because "love" was in it.

He likes you and feels comfortable talking to you. I still have x-wives I talk to.
Depending what's on my mind that I want to share with another and get questions answered, I might call up a friend, a daughter, x-wive #1 or x-wife #2.
You need to find another guy as this is really a waste of your time.
