Personally I don't think you should play it safe if what you love is writing. Right now I am a theater major simply because I love studying the different elements of the theater. I have no idea what I will do with this in the future, but I do know that I will figure it out.

You'll get some people blowing smoke up your tail with the whole "do anything you set your mind to" mantra, but the reality of the situation is that you're not likely to make a lot of money as a creative writer unless you're brilliant and/or lucky. Why don't you major in English with a concentration in creative writing? You can do a LOT with an English degree. You want to teach? Great. The door is open. Law school? Perfect! Journalism? OK! Plenty of opportunities, and plenty of ways to write that you may not even be considering yet. Most "writing degrees" are essentially English degrees anyway, so the question itself is almost moot. As for the "go-getters" who are saying things like "follow your dreams" and "I'm a walking cliche machine," you should remember one thing: you're going to have to put food on the table, and living on dreams ain't gonna cut it.

Even though both of these careers involve English, they don't share a lifestyle at all. Writing for a living is usually a very solitary occupation, but that isn't true for teaching at all. Fortunately, you can get a degree in English and then decide later on if you want to get a teaching credential or apply your writing skills professionally.

i agree with the first noter..
However, you can also teach with an English degree and write books on the side ?
Alot of professors at colleges do so :)
Its how they keep their interests going :)
I wouldn't recomend Journalism for you though...simply because it is extremely broad and its tough to break into. You have to really like it and be sure about it from the beginning in terms of yes this is what i want to do for a living for sure, or else its not for you.
I'm a Broadcast Journalism student at a University. I know..many of my classemates thought they liked it because they thought they liked writing but it wasn't for them.
Take some time, find yourself and be sure..only then you will be 50 years old some day and know you've made the right career choice.
good luck :)

First, you have to ask yourself what your purpose in life is. Are you destined to write the greatest books known to man, or are you going to scavenge through dumpsters in hopes of finding porn for the rest of your life? Get a degree in whatever the hell you want. I would recommend a masters in 3rd century african-american pigmy art history.

You could be a writer or a technical writer, or even try journalism.
