The fastest ship in the Navy is a Nimitz class aircraft carrier. It's not fast acceleration but once it gets up there nothing will stop it short of an island. But the fastest ship was the USS Enterprise who did 101MPH with 8 submarine Nuclear reactors. (Retrofit of coarse) It ain't easy moving that much steal but it did it. and since there not diesel there range is practically unlimited.

The Sea Fighter. The fastest ship in the US Navy is the Sea Fighter FSF-1, which can operate at speeds greater than 50 knots and has a range of approximately 4000 nautical miles.

---------------------

The USS Skipjack's official speed is well under this, but it's possible that it had a very fast top speed. After being launched May 26, 1958, Skipjack was soon dubbed the "world's fastest submarine," after setting the speed record on sea trials in March of that same year. It was designed to have a speed in excess of 20 knots, but its actual speed was a guarded secret.

Sorry rat but that claim is very unbelievable. A DD doing 42 knots is crazy enough but a submarine running circles around that is even more outrageous.

The Sea Fighter is still an experimental craft and not in full production so I don't consider them a part of the fleet of US Navy ships. Since the top speed of submarines is classified as Top Secret, I can't divulge the information but I can tell you that US nuclear submarines can outrun any surface craft they are up against.

I believe the attack subs are currently the fastest vessel in use by the USN. However a few years ago the had several hydrofoil vessels that could really motor, 50+ knots. Neat little boats, but their mission flexibility was limited.

As someone previously stated the true top speed for naval vessels is classified. I can personally attest to being on an aircraft carrier (now decommissioned) that exceeded 60 knots.

in 1960 I was on a destroyer that did 42 knots. The sub ss skipjack ran rings around us while we steamed straight ahead. bloody quick i reckon. they reckon it could do over 60 knots underwater.
