Usually I eat alot of curries and rice and stuff cause I'm Indian. Now I need to cut the carbs, and i don't know where to start. If i cut carbs, should i also cut out good carbs like fruits and veggies? What should i do about meat? Should I boil chicken and eat it, or is it okay to fry it in extra virgin olive oil? Help me please, and add any other tips that come to mind!

You can cook chicken in a skillet using Pam. You can bake it, grill it, broil it and yes boil it. Beef and pork should be lean meat and not fried. 3% ground beef broiled or grilled is great.

Stop eating white food. This would include flour, potatoes, rice, sugar, etc. Eat green and yellow vegetables, all you want. Fruits are still good, but avoid fruit juices.

After a few weeks you can add rice back as long as you continue with the veggies and don't add grease. A little extra virgin olive oil is OK but don't over-do it. Drink only no fat milk. Drink lots of water throughout the day.

Okay, first of all, all carbs are not bad. Carbs help supply a good amount of our energy! It's those sugar carbs that you need to watch out for, and that includes white bread, white rice, sweets, etc. When you eat any carbs, it's best to go with whole-wheat. I'm a sweets addict, so it's hard, but I'm in the right weight range for my height. Portion control is key. You don't want a huge heaping of any food! Eat about six mini meals throughout the day and you'll feel full and satisfied, not to mention it'll boost your metabolism. I usually count calories instead of carbs. A person usually needs to consume about 1,500 calories a day if they're trying to lose weight, but if you're more active you need more calories.

Really, you can eat almost anything as long as you exercise a few times a week and use portion control. A good way to know if you're overeating is to measure it like this: serving of rice=handful, meat=palm of your hand, etc. You don't need to cut out fruits and veggies at all! Those are things that you can snack on all day long, that is, considering they're raw or fixed without oils or any other fattening cooking products. Boiling, baking, and grilling are probably the best ways to prepare your chicken. Extra virgin olive oil is fine in small amounts, but not when you fry stuff. Fried food is just not good for a person. It's amazing how everything that tastes so good is so bad for you, isn't it? I hate it, but hey, it's okay every now and then, rgiht? I hope this helped a little bit, and good luck with your new healthy eating lifestyle!

Make all grains whole- you said you eat a lot of rice, so instead of eating white rice, eat whole grain rice because it has more vitamins and fiber. Do the same for pasta, bread, and crackers too. Never eliminate fruits and vegetables because those are the best things you can eat. When choosing dairy stick to non fat milks, some cheese, and low sugar yogurts. Including lean meat in your diet like chicken, turkey, and fish is a good idea. Some other healthy sources of protein are mixed nuts and beans. Remember, to cut down on as much added sugars and fat as possible, this includes candy, chips, butter, salad dressings, ect. Don't forget to drink lots of water! ☺

first off, this little bit isnt about losing weight, its just about eating healthy.
carbs: a carbohydrate is a sugar, you have many sugars but refined sugar (the white sugar u usually put in your tea, coffee, cakes, etc) are the worst.. eating an apple has unrefined sugar. u can also sweeten stuff with brown sugar or honey. artificial sweeteners are not fattening but that stuff isnt really good for you.
Meats: meats are really important for you, you are made in huge part of proteins and you need them. (if u decide to go vegetarian remember to eat alot of beans!!) eat chicken breasts instead of chicken legs and wings, fish is also really good as alot of fish have high amounts of Omega-3 which not only help your heart but also ur brain. red meat isnt BAD for you as long as you get cuts that dont have too much fat ( a ribeye steak will kill you, sirloin wont). boiling red meat or fish isnt a good idea as the flavour particles dont 'activite' at the maximum temperature of water. what i do is boil my chicken with laurel leaves, salt and pepper then marinate it and throw it in the oven for 10-15mins to get the flavour. u can do that with ur red meats and fish aswell..
dairy: dairy is important aswell, dont buy 3.25% milk, rather buy 1% or 0% (i rather 1% as it tastes better than 0%)
fibres: fibres are very good for you (especially if your older) it keeps ur digestive tract in top shape. (eating too much proteins and not enough fibers can lead to colon cancer).
your typical fibres can be found bread, veggies and fruit.

this is how to make your eating healthier.
1- bake ur meats instead of frying them
2- eat whole wheat bread
3- dont butter ur naan bread, use olive oil, it tastes good i promiss.
4- leave the skin on ur fruits (more fiber)
5- no refined sugar (coke, candy, or whatever else.)
6- if ur hungry eat a fruit or 2, preferebaly with a low GI (glycemic index) u can find that online.
7- balance your meals

typical balanced meal:
breakfast: 1 egg ,coffee, bagel
midmorning snack: unpeeled fruit (of course peel a banana if thats what u want)
lunch: a chicken breats, marinated with heabs, baked in the oven, with a side of...i dunno lets say spinach
mid afternoon snack: a fruit or two again, or maybe a vegetable (cucumber with spread cheese)
dinner: big salad
late night snack: glass of milk with some honey (i swear this makes u sleep better)

also i suggest u start a small workout regimen to keep ur heart healthy (run 15 mins in the morning should be enough) or just walk more, walk to work instead of your car or use a bike, use the stairs, etc. Eating healthy is a good start. best of luck with that.
what you can do is get the food pyramid that the government supplies. if not the american one, then im sure the canadian one has one.

Follow these 8 rules of eating, and you’ll more easily manage your weight and improve your nutrition – all in one swoop.

1. Eat when you’re hungry. And eat often, so you’re never famished. But have your last meal at least three hours before bed.

2. Change your plates. Switch to 9-inch plates for meals, not the usual 11- or 13-inch variety. Smaller plates = smaller portions.

3. Eat these every day:

a. Nine handfuls, total, of fruits and vegetables
b. At least 1 ounce of nuts (a small handful)
c. High-fiber whole-grain bread or cereal, especially in the morning
Note: You may use extra virgin olive oil and lemon for your salad

4. Eat fish at least 3 times a week ideally salmon, mahi mahi, tilapia, catfish or flounder. The other days eat
chicken without skin, or lean beef. You should boil, broil, or pan fry in non stick pan with Pam spray, or a small amount of olive oil.

5. Be a hot tomato. Eat at least 10 tablespoons of cooked tomato products (ketchup, marinara sauce) a week for a healthy dose of the antioxidant lycopene, which can decrease the risk of prostate and other cancers.

6. Avoid these like a hot potato:

a. Anything that contains trans and/or saturated fats
b. White foods -- white bread, white rice, white pasta, creamy sauces -- white tends to go with foods that are highly processed, high fat, or both
c. Products that list simple sugars, including high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), in the first few ingredients; they put your blood sugar on a roller coaster that makes you crave high-calorie foods
d. Avoid excess of salt (sodium). Use it only in moderation, and season your meals with herbs instead.

7. Before you eat, drink. Have 1 or 2 glasses of water before every meal to help fill you up.

8. Take daily:

a. Vitamins and minerals that contain at least 800 micrograms of folate, 400 IU of vitamin D, 1,200 milligrams of calcium, and 400 milligrams of magnesium.
b. If you don’t eat fish, an omega-3 supplement that contains 2 grams of these heart-healthy fatty acids.

Keep yourself active. Walk for 30 min. daily.

Please don't go for one of those fad diets. If you can afford it, consult a dietician. If not, try something sensible like Weight Watchers. That worked for me. If going to meetings is a drag, check out their online program. I don't know much about it, but it would be better than going it alone.
