My dog (rotweiler shepard mix) has had many dry skin problems over the years and I have recently found a natural shampoo that works well and smells great too and that is made by Groomax for dogs Soothing Oatmeal Shampoo and it has aloe vera in it. I believe I got it at PetSmart. Since I have been using it my dog seems to not be scratching nearly as much.
Hope this helps!

Find a shampoo that is all natural and made with oatmeal. If you can find an oatmeal conditioner that would also help. Make sure you let each one soak into the dog's skin for at least 10 minutes. Use warm but not hot water. If you must blow dry him, use the low/cool setting on your blow dryer. If it's a warm day, just towel him off and let him run around outside to dry. Hot drying will dry his skin right back out. Aloe products are good too. Maybe even use an oatmeal shampoo and an aloe conditioner or vice versa.

There is a shampoo called Australian Tea Tree that you can get at most large pet stores or order it through PetEdge.com. I have 2 dogs with dry flaky skin & after talking to my vet, we tried it on both dogs & it has worked great. I have used it on my chow-mix for 10 years & now on my yorkie mix for 5 years. Otherwise, the oatmeal shampoo is good too. And like some of the other answers, never use people shampoo on a dog. It has too much soap & fragrances that are irritating to their skin. Hope this helps.

First, take your pup to the vet to make sure it doesn't have a condition that needs medical treatment. Aveeno Oatmeal bath is a very soothing remedy for itchy skin. I have also seen some chihuahuas who needed baby oil applied daily to help with itchy skin. You can also give liquid infant Benadryl if it seems to be allergy related. give one fourth of the smallest dose recommended on the label. It will probably only be a drop or two, but will help the itchies.

Yeah, don't bath him so often.. He is dry cause you keep bathing him and stripping his skin and coat of the natural oils that are necessary to keep him from being dry.. It's a vicious circle when you bath them all the time...
Bath = Dryness, so you Bath, which = even MORE Dryness... And so on and so on ..

use a baby shampoo enriched with aloe vera.
My son has a chihuahua and he had itchy dry skin and it has gone away since he started bathing him with baby shampoo with aloe. He started by bathing him twice a week with it and now bathes him only once a week. His hair is healthier looking too.
