Ok I have had plenty of digital cameras, and they will take video but wont zoom during the video. Before I start recording, it will zoom in and out, but not during the video recording. I just got a new digital camera and it does zoom during the recording but only digital zoom, and when i do the video gets blurry. Why wont it do optical zoom during a recording, and why does it get blurry with the digital zoom

As previously state, most digital cameras are not made to zoom while recording video.

However, at least one is ... the Canon Powershot S3 IS. Not only does it zoom during video (there is slight sound of zoom, but very faint), it also records sound in stereo.

If you read through reviews of a camera before you purchase is, most reviews will point out things like this.

Like Michael said, they're not designed as video cameras, so lack features of a video system.

Digital zoom has nothing to do with optical zoom, it's just a "blow up" of the standard digital pixels. Bigger zoom means less image defined means less resolution, thus the blurry image.

I think it's designed that way to encourage you to by a video camera also.

Digital Cameras don't zoom with video. It's not meant to make a long video, just a short caption.

That is why they have video cameras.

They don't make digi cams so that you can zoom in while recording. That's what video cams are for. (like the guy said). That's also how come some digi cams aren't meant to record sound . Mine doesn't unfortunately. I was saving up for a digi cam to save $ on pics, which I never develop cuz I end up taking 300 pics ! lol...I have a Nikon Coolpix L4 digi cam. @ least I get to make vids of my baby niece ! :)

I don't think you'd be able to zoom in on a reg video cam either. Only the best can zoom in after recording .(police, cams in banks, etc)

My camera does the same thing. If you zoom in b4 you record the video, it will let you zoom in and out. But if you don't zoom in b4 you record it, it won't let you zoom. It doesn't make sense! Why do companies do that?! BTW I have a nikon coolpix 4600
