Train is the best option if you are travelling in 1-2 peoples.
For more than 2 people it's cheaper by car and the trip it will take abt. 3 hours ( 285 kms) http://www.viamichelin.com/viamichelin/int/dyn/controller/Driving_directions#startLocid=31NDFsenkxMGNOREV1T0RrMU5EYz1jTVRJdU5EZ3lNekk9&destLocid=31NDFoOTAxMGNORE11TnpZNE56TT1jTVRFdU1qVTJPUT09&step1Locid=&step2Locid=&vh=CAR&distance=km&strVehicle=0&intItineraryType=1&devise=1.0|EUR&isAvoidFrontiers=false&isFavoriseAutoroute=false&isAvoidPeage=false&isAvoidVignette=false&isAvoidLNR=false&carTypeHidden=Citadine&caravaneHidden=false&typeCarbHidden=essence&autoConso=9.0&villeConso=8.0&routeConso=7.0&carbCost=1.3&dtmDeparture=23/04/2007
or a 1,40 / 2 hours by train assuming you'll chose the fastest trains. However both on ES/Eurostar and IC/Intercity the seat reservation is mandatory. Here is the link for yr checking

and an example for yr choice

For me the best way to arrive into Firenze from Roma is by train. It take you around 2 hours( all dependes wich train you take, eurostar or IC/Intercity) but the best of all you can catch the most pretty view your ever see, no matter what season of year you go. I travel all the time around Europe in the last 5 year by train and is the best experence. If you are U.S citizen and you are planning to use several time the train system no matter where you want to go between countries in Europe you can buy the Eurail pass in your home town, this pass you can't find in Europe and is more cheaper than buy a simple ticket everytime your going to different (or inside) country. You can check this in www.eurail.com

Take the train (about 1:30 to 2:00 hours, depending on the train). Check out http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html for train schedules and fares.

I think its a couple of hours by train.
Its easy as the train network is pretty efficient and you can buy a ticket at the train station easily too.

I am assuming there are buses too, but trains are so nice to travel in.
