We are getting married in our back yard. We already have three kids and he is the only one that works there will be 20-40 people there. I am trying to find and cheaper way to feed everyone and still have a good time.

I think barbecue or picnic style reception is a really great non stressful way to culminate a really great day. I dont care if you are wearing a tiara and $13,000 dress if you want to chuck the gown for a sundress or blue jeans let your hair down and party your butt off go for it! Who says you cant have a formal elegant wedding and then head to a park or backyard for a cookout? A lot of stuck up uptight people who probably have ulcers for being so uptight.
The only thing I would leave out are the burgers not just for time but for convenience as who eats cold burgers and they are not great reheated. For dogs and brats or cheddar wurst our fav there are a lot less condiments required and they cook faster and are great cold. Throw in some potato salad baked beans coleslaw lemonade and watermelon and you are ready for a serious shindig. This also saves ALOT of money when it comes to decorating. Seriously throw on some red checked table covers with a citronella candle in the center maybe even a fly swatter or two with a little tag that has the bride and grooms name attached and just have fun with it. Some people get so caught up in the drama of a wedding that they forget it is supposed to be a celebration of the joining of two lives. Celebrate til you drop and hope the ones who complain go home hungry(LOL) bet they wont!

What some people in this world we live in don't understand is that you don't have to spend thousands of dollars to have a good time and to have a successful wedding! Alot of regular ol working class people can't afford a full sit down dinner complete with all the fancy trimmings that some can.
Personally I see nothing wrong with hamburgers and hot dogs for the menu. You'll already be in the backyard during the ceremony with family and friends and what better way to celebrate your special day? A good hamburger or hot dog fresh off a hot grill can't be beat! Add the trimmings and an ice cold drink and you've made somebody happy! Simple, cost efficient and satisfying, what more could you ask for?
Best wishes for a beautiful and happy wedding day!

The backyard BBQ sounds fine for a wedding... but to be honest I'd hold off on the hamburgers simply because a really good juicy burger is a messy thing to eat! And I've done a lot of BBQ's and they really aren't the easiest way to go!

Either make or get some pre-made salads (potato, cole slaw, tossed, bean, whatever) and head to Costco and pick up some inexpensive steaks (even their round steak is tender enough to BBQ.. marinade if you like) or some boneless pork chops (yummy but cheap!). My hubby has a great technique for doing steak for a crowd... instead of fiddling around asking how people want it, he throws it all on at once, and as it cooks he announces "rare is ready" etc. That way people come get it as it's done as they like and aren't all trying to fix up plates at the same time!

Make sure the plates are Chinet at least though... cheap paper plates just don't work for real meat!

I think you'll find that after calculating the cost of the burgers, buns, condiments, cheese, etc you won't save a whole lot over having something like steak or pork!

Hope the sun shines bright on your wedding day :)

Oh those girls that have made bitchy comments, well we don't all have rich daddies to pay for our weddings, some of us are doing it off our own backs!!! I'm having a very informal wedding with a BBQ reception, we're not doing burgers and hotdogs but only because they aren't a favourite of ours, or our guests, but it is perfectly acceptable to serve those items, after all, the important part of the day is the actual getting married bit, (although judging by some of the nasty comments there are people that view the party as the most important thing) and your friends and family are there to support you, I doubt that anyone will make any negative comments, most people will just be happy to be there to celebrate with you, and they'll be grateful to be fed anything.

My husband and I had hamburgers and hotdogs at our reception... It worked out really well and we heard nothing but rave reviews on the menu... be sure to have the trimmings as well... My father was the chef (he said he would do it but only if mom let him get a new grill... It ok we all got it he wanted a grill and found an excuse lol) he cooked the burgers and dogs in the 30-45 minutes before the wedding so he wouldn't have to be stuck at the grill for the party... we kept them warm in the oven during the ceremony... (it was short)

People loved it the relax atmosphere of a bbq was lovely...

You would think that it would be perfectly fine, but you would not believe the expectations that some people have. I think that if you wedding is outdoors, then it should be just fine, but if you wedding is indoors it might be a bad idea. Either way if its outdoors or indoors, keep in mind that you will have some people snarling and talking about you - That is just how some people are.

Personally I would not see a problem with it if I were the guest, as long as you had all of the other typical BBQ foods in addition to the hamburgers and hot dogs (potato salad, baked beans, Cole slaw, corn on the cob and so on.)

Good Luck!

BBQ's no matter for what type of party, are a good idea. I think they really bring out a family type atmosphere and can save you TONS on the food bill.

I say make sure you have other things too though- you can get chicken from a food wholesaler in your area, just check around, and make sure to have the BBQ essentials like salads, side dishes, and the whole 9 yards!

I LOVE bbq's! Throw in some brats too!!

There is no right or wrong answer here. It's your wedding plan a menu that works for you. You can add chicken for people who do not eat meat and have some salad on the side. Everyone loves a bbq. Congrats on the big day and enjoy..

Depends on the size and formality of the wedding. If it's only a few friends and immediate family- sure. If you're inviting quite a lot of people I would try to make it a bit more elegant and serve a real meal like chicken and fancy pasta salads, maybe a baked potato bar (load their own potatoes) or even steak, fish & shrimp. Remember that these guests will be bringing gifts and are probably expecting a nice meal in return.
