I am a psych nurse and I deal with borderlines everyday.
A borderline is selfish, inconsiderate, manipulative, and demanding. They care nothing about anyone except themselves. They want others around only so long as they can get something from those others. When you have nothing to give them, they care nothing for you whatsoever.
They are self destructive and impulsive. They are classic drama queens and abusers.
They lie, cheat, steal, not for their own benefit, but for the drama. They thrive on drama with no care as to how it effects others. Getting someone fired or arrested for something that never happened is often an ideal way for a borderline to get their drama fix.
Most are med seeking oralcoholic. They think nothing of spending their rent money on designer clothes, that complaining how unfair it is that they become homeless.
Most lie compulsively.
Some will put their own possessions into another person's room or purse, then claim the items are stolen...just for the drama.
Simply...borderlines are the scum of the earth and serve no useful purpose in society--except maybe helping hospitals and rehabs collect medicare dollars.

My experience is extremes, laughing one minutes, tears the next. Happy one day, depressed the next and always some form of alcohol involved, out in the open or hidden away morning, noon and night. The serious problem being they refuse to accept the diagnosis and state it is not a problem, but another persons fault, perhaps the person who diagnosed is wrong. If they hit the highs and lows, life really takes off, from hours of verbal abuse to apologies the following day. They can then go into stealing, shop lifting, self harm, it really is a no win situation and a worry for those around them. Likewise you never know when you contact them what reaction you will receive, good, bad or indifferent.

Borderline personality disorder is often a devastating mental condition. Perhaps shaped by harmful childhood experiences or brain dysfunctions, people diagnosed with borderline personality disorder live in a world of inner and outer turmoil. They have difficulty regulating their emotions and are often in a state of upheaval. They have distorted images of themselves, often feeling worthless and fundamentally bad or damaged.
They may experience :
Strong emotions that wax and waye frequently
Intense but short espisodes of anxiety or depression
Inappropriate anger, sometimes exercising into physical confronation
Fear of being alone
Difficulty coontrolling emotions or impulses

psyche nurse: I am a borderline and I am NOT EVEN CLOSE to what you described. And to answer the question: everyone reacts differently to different situations, her drinking is her way of hurting herself and she needs someone to tell her it's not right. Also going to the doctor and just having family around her supporting her will be amazing. Just the fact that you asked this question shows how much you care for her and this will help so much in helping her deal with this and overcome it. Well done! <3

To Keltillo...If you are indeed a psyche nurse then you should have your license revoked as your mandate is to help not harm. You are harming with the spread of your uneducated opinion wrapped in the guise of professional speak in reference to people with BPD who suffer greatly and are desperately seeking help and peace. Just like a person with diabetes; a person with BPD is ill due to no fault of their own. Shame on you, and pity to anyone in crisis with this disorder who has the sour luck to run into you. And you know better, what does that say about you?

i would suggest a diagnotic statistical manual of psychologists [ the current version is 9 i believe]. Border line personality traits include emotional outbursts to gain attention and or sympathy, chronic lying, exaggeration; and manipulitive efforts. Rarely are borderline personalities violent toward others are often destructive toward themselves. Victims of addiction and sex crimes often wind up borderline. Do not take my word for it. if she is ill get her help. it is a long road to recovery and i wish her well on the journey.

There is a classic book called "I Hate You, Don't Leave Me". You may find a lot of the answers you're looking for in that book.
Fear of and frantic efforts to avoid abandonment, risk-taking, manipulative behaviors and self-injury are a few of the classic symptoms.
BPD and addictive disorders are not uncommonly co-morbid.
Best of luck to you,
~M~

First of all to the alleged psych nurse....if that's your true profession...get a new one.!!!! How pathetic that you feel you need to ridicule, and speak of your own patients in such a manner. People are people, Borderline doesn't depict a whole being. Of course there are common characteristcs, but to stigmatize is just ignorant.
