A lot of people might not like this answer... but it's something that's currently working for me. I believe we should choose something that we personally feel comfortable with. For me, that's eating one meal a day.
Let me explain by first saying this. I know so many people who have used the five mini meal a day approach and also so many who have used the one big meal a day approach. Different things work for different people.
5 mini meals a day would have worked for me had I kept at it but I couldn't. I'm a compulsive overeater. And on top of that, I have what they call Night Eating Syndrome. I binge throughout the day and as if that isn't bad enough, I'd binge at night as well. It was food food food, all the time. Eating 5 meals a day would put me in that mentality. I couldn't stop at a cup of rice. I'd have two. I couldn't stop at one turkey sandwich, I'd have two.
Also, I'm a full-time student. My schedule doesn't allow me to eat every three hours. That's another problem. I would have classes and would have to go 5-6 hours without food so at my next meal, I would overeat.
What's really helping me right now is my one meal a day approach. I eat once a day, which is lunch. But I make sure to consume enough calories. Typically, that would be 1200 calories. I'd eat healthy stuff, like a peanut butter sandwich, turkey sandwich, fruits, veggies or whatever healthy stuff that's made at home, just enough to total 1200 calories. And beside that, I take a multivitamin, too, to make sure I've taken in all my vitamin and minerals.
After that one meal, I'm happy and comfortably full. I know that this is it for the rest of the day and I wouldn't have to worry about food anymore. I drink water throughout the rest of the day.
I eat one meal a day because I don't want my life and time scheduled around food. I want to eat to live not live to eat.
As for starvation mode, I dunno what to tell you. In my book, there's no such thing as starvation mode. I've never experienced starvation mode where my metabolism has slowed down and I'm storing fat. That's never happened to me.
I'm no nutritional expert and you should only do what you feel is right and doable. I'm just telling you what's worked for me. Hope you find the way that works for you. :)

There are two answers to this question:
1. If you are between the age of 12-26, it is probably because you are during puberty, and you shouldn't try to break the addiction. Just eat healthy foods (don't avoid calories)
2. If you already broke the age of 26, you should try going to weight watchers (a dieting organization) or if you really are still having that problem, visit a therepist. But still eat about 3 meals a day and excersize regularly (but not too much). that will help you lose weight.

all professional athletes eat 6 meals a day. this will keep your metabolism firing away all day long AND keep you satisfied rather than feeling hungry. this will also stabilize your blood sugar level so that you don't go into fat storage mode like you do when you go more than 3 hours with out eating. just eating one big meal a day would slow down your metabolism way too much. though i am not a pro athlete...this is the way i eat. i would reccomend reading more about it yourself. some books that explain this eating plan really well are "The Abs Diet" and "The Eat Clean Diet." proper nutrition accounts for 80% of how your body looks. i do well on this plan because i have always been a bottomless pit when it comes to food...always hungry. you must remember though that instead of 3 big meals you are eating 6 small meals NOT 6 big meals.

I'm in the same boat and I couldn't do this either though I did try. I reduced my calories and ate healthy but I didn't loose weight.
One meal a day is not good I know because of the way your body burns energy. You need to keep your body fueled throughout the day in order to lose weight.
If you drink like juice or something nutritious or eat yogurt throughout the da you could technically have one bigger meal, but most experts are discouraging that. What don't you try something like this?
If you are planning say fried chicken mashed potatoes and green beans for dinner. Eat them seperately and at different times throughout the day and you'll loose weight, but if you sit down and eat it all at once you will not.

by eating 5-6 small meals a day you keep your metabolism going, if you eat just one - it slows down.
find calorie/fitness calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
dont try to lose more than 1-2lbs a week - its not healthy to lose more.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have lean meat (protein) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio exercise 4-6 times a week for 30-50min, light weight training
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, past etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried - no junk food.
