Soda water and commercial "soda fountains" (like Starbucks today, except they served soft drinks instead of coffee) had been around for over 50 years before they took off. The first big success was none other than Coca-Cola (which originally contained cocaine). The Coca-Cola company is generally credited both with recognizing the importance of advertising to boost demand, and with developing the distribution system where syrup is provided to local bottlers, who produce the final product.
Earlier, though, was Dr. Pepper, developed in 1885 in Waco, Texas. They did pretty well, but their big break came in the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis, where they served Dr. Pepper to more than 20 million people. Some say that same fair was where hamburgers, hot dogs in buns, and ice cream cones got their start. From then on, it was nowhere but up!

soda was a cure all, something that you could charge about as much as a lunch for and it was supposed to clean out bowels, help liver problems, cure cancers, t.b., help pregnant mothers, etc., for the first 25 odd years back in the 1800s. People were sure it had someting in the syrups besides suger. Also, the carbonation was a new fangled Idea that seemed to help digestion.

Normally I would check wiki , but I am going to guess on this one and say ,
Coke Cola -
Since there was real cocaine in the original formula ,
It became very popular and demand continued even after the cocaine was removed .
I don't think people questioned ingredients much in those days .
Wiki it , does it bear me out or am I wrong ?
