Consider exorcisms to be like chemotherapy. In both, the treatment ravages both the host and the disease. The goal is that the treatment will target the disease more strongly, but it's still possible that the damage to the host would be significant enough to kill them. In chemo, cells are being killed. In an exorcism, the body is being deprived of nutrients and abused.

Some sects, in their excorcisms, use physical violence, and may use starvation and denying water to the "possessed" in order to drive out the spirits. An exorcism, depending on the religion, can be a long, drawn out ordeal, and sometimes, the person dies from the physical punishment they are put through.

Have you ever seen "The Exorcism of Emily Rose"? It was based on a real case, except that the real thing was much more tragic and horrifying than the movie. The priests kept at it for months...she actually destroyed her kneecaps doing genuflections. It was a slow, undoubtedly painful death.

The are not given food or water, though in some cases they refuse both. They have violent spasms that can break their bones or if the head is secured there is head pounding--this is also natural to the disease epilepsy. They are kept awake for days as they are prayed over. There are a few cases where clamp like instruments were inserted into the body of the "possessed" to clasp the demon and bring it to a place where holy water could be splashed on it.

I don't even like to remember my studies on this subject and writing on it has already got me riled.

Exorcism is a procedure for removing demons or evil spirits from a person's body. It has nothing to do with dying.
