1. EVERYBODY is allowed to attend Catholic Mass on Sunday or any other day of the week. There are no restrictions. 2. People who are in a state of mortal sin can attend, but they must not receive the Holy Eucharist. Also, non-Catholics must not receive the Holy Eucharist because they are not in Communion with the Church. (If they agree with Catholicism, they can easily become Catholic and then receive.) The exception would be for Orthodox Christians, who may receive the Eucharist at a Catholic parish when there is no Orthodox liturgy available to them. 3. Catholic people who have same sex attraction may or may not be in a state of mortal sin, so they should consult with a priest to be sure they are free to receive the Holy Eucharist. If they have accepted the fact that they have same-sex attraction, that's not a barrier to receiving the Holy Eucharist. If, however, they are indulging in an illicit sexual relationship, then they would not be in a state of Grace and could not receive.

There's nothing in the Bible that says that gays or witches or whores or any kind of sinful people are not allowed to be in the church. They're welcome to come and listen, but they're NOT welcome to spread their ideas or to be in a leadership position. Godparents are nothing... just a couple of people who promise to help the child grow mature in their christian walk. Obviously this couple is NOT mature since they're willfully sinning, but then some churches don't seem to care about how people actually live. This is a big part of why I'm not in the Catholic church. Because it's a broken institution fr the most part. There are good catholic and anglican churches, but for the most part they're about as blind as the rest of the world.
I suggest you find a church that is a little more serious about what the Bible says instead of what the "pope" or any other person says.

Sounds like it's not the church's decision, it is a personal decision made by that family. The church seems to have performed the baptism without really acknowledging the issue (it's not like a baptism is dependent on the presence of potential Godparents). If Godparents were ordained by the church instead of chosen by the parents, then that would complicate things, wouldn't it?

Anyway, I would be more worried about pederasty if I were you. Worry about your own kids in the hands of those creepy priests.

The Catholic Church is open to sinners of all kinds.

Whether a gay couple should have been chosen as Godparents is a whole different story.

As a beginning Catholic theologian who is also a celibate lesbian, I can tell you that the Catholic Church is not against homosexual people. The Church asks that homosexual people remain celibate, but also teaches that all people should embrace their sexual orientations. Furthermore, the Catechism states that homosexual people should not be discriminated against. The godparents in this situation have just as much a place in the Church as anyone else. If they have a sexual relationship, their actions run contrary to Church teaching...but we all do such things from time to time. I have yet to meet a person who hasn't told a lie, coveted his neighbor's possessions, etc. If you were to become a godparent but struggled with sin (which we all do because we're human), would that sin automatically make you unfit for the role? Whether or not you believe on a personal level that homosexual actions are sinful, the Church is not "against" gay people themselves. To quote the Catechism:

"2358 The number of men and women who have deep-seated homosexual tendencies is not negligible. This inclination, which is objectively disordered, constitutes for most of them a trial. They must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided. These persons are called to fulfill God's will in their lives and, if they are Christians, to unite tothe sacrifice of the Lord's Cross the difficulties they may encounter from their condition.

2359 Homosexual persons are called to chastity. By the virtues of self-mastery that teach them inner freedom, at times by the support of disinterested friendship, by prayer and sacramental grace, they can and should gradually and resolutely approach Christian perfection. "

Yes, gays are allowed in the church. The priest isn't going to be rude to them.

The problem you describe though is odd. The godparents are supposed to be Catholics of good standing who guide the child. If this was a gay couple...they are not that. Since the Church doesn't accept gay couples, or practicing homosexuals...they should not have been allowed to be godparents...and it's really silly that they would have been asked.

Here are the parents saying "I want my child to be Catholic" then they are doing an extremely un-Catholic thing in who they choose as godparents. It's like shooting your foot so you can walk better..it doesn't make sense.

Well, that is not a very good choice on the part of the parents. The role of the Godparents is to be an example of a good Christian to that child and to help the parents to teach the child the faith. If the Godparents are gay and sexually active as such then you have every right to be annoyed. That is an outrage and an insult to the teaching of the Catholic Church. I can't believe a priest would allow this to happen. Of course gays are allowed to attend Mass, but if they are sexually active they are in the state of mortal sin and should not be allowed to partake of the Sacraments.

God bless,
Stanbo

Everyone is welcome in the Catholic Church, since it is the one universal Christian Church founded by Christ for all mankind. Homosexuals, while accepted as members of the Church just like anyone else, are also encouraged and supported in turning away from their sin, just like anyone else. A homosexual "couple" is not acceptable as godparents, just as a heterosexual "couple" living together without benefit of marriage is not acceptable. Your priest acted in open defiance of the teaching of the Church by allowing this, which unfortunately is all too common among some of todays liberal-minded priests, and he should be reported to the bishop for doing so.

So, you are an annoyed BIGOT. Yes, gays are a "allowed" in the Roman Catholic Church. What do you think those priests do when young and horny, lady? A good percentage ARE gay, more so than in the outside world, let me assure you of that.
Here's some scripture for YOU to read if you consider yourself a good Catholic, AND a Christian. John 3:16 tells you EXACTLY who is a Christian and who will be saved. James 2:10 tells you that sins are alike, and that if you sin (by judging, etc.,) what the consequences of that are. Read and decide for yourself.
