Yes. New rules this year. See the link below for details. Get your passport application at the post office and do it at least a couple months before your vacation. It takes a while to process. You can get it quicker by paying around $50 extra though.

" * Beginning January 23, 2007, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document, or an Alien Registration Card, Form I-551, if applicable.
* As early as January 1, 2008, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. While recent legislative changes permit a later deadline, the Departments of State and Homeland Security are working to meet all requirements as soon as possible. Ample advance notice will be provided to enable the public to obtain passports or passport cards for land/sea entries."
This is a direct quote from the US Department of State.

There are a lot of incorrect answers to this question. Lynn H answers it best by quoting from the State Dept.
The law changed in Jan of this year to require passports to come back into the US. Please do not leave the country (whether to Canada or Mexico) without a passport! You won't get back in.

ABSOLUTELY. To travel anywhere out of the United States, you need a passport. As of January 2007, birth certificates and licenses are NOT accepted. You absolutely need a passport, as does everyone in your party, children included.

Especially being an US citizen; but I would hold off on any trips to Mexico because there is HUGE Hostilities growing between Mexican People and the Americans(Especially if you are a white/Christian. They have planned a Big time march on California in May 2007, and also plan on seizing LA and other key cities, they have said on C-Span that they wish to eradicate White Christian America. They have threatened Violence .

Not legally, no. Not yet. I live over there, so I cross a lot, so I know. They haven't been able to enforce that as law yet because of the way it would affect tourism in Mexico. They would prefer that you have one, but it wouldn't really change anything. For now an ID and/or birth certificate will suffice. And to everyone who said yes, I know whoever agrees with them is going to read my answer and be convinced that I'm wrong, but I don't have a US passport yet, and I cross the US-Mex border nearly everyday. The requirement of carrying a US passport when crossing has NOT been enforced yet as law. Also, when driving across they don't stop you unless they suspect you're carrying something illegal. It's driving back into the US that you have to present identification. Maybe to take a plane there and back you need one but not to drive.

No, but you will need proof of US citizenship, such as a birth certificate, and a photo ID, such as a state-issued drivers license or ID card. You are well advised to get a passport, anyway, and carry it with you to Mexico or Canada. It is the ultimate proof of US citizenship. An adult US passport is good for ten years, so if you plan a trip to Mexico or Canada, get it anyway, in case you get a chance to go to another country sometime later. My brother just came back from there two weeks ago as well... You do not need one yet!
