ZIP is an acronym for Zone Improvement Plan which was created by the USPS in the 1940s as a way to improve mail delivery.

ZIP (always all caps) does stand for Zone Inmprovement Plan. ZIP codes were first used in 1963, and at that time were voluntary. In 1967, they were made mandatory. The ZIP + 4 system came in 1983.
