I like to use freshly ground black pepper. Sea Salt and garlic powder. Its simple and tastes good but doesn't over power the flavor of the meat

It depends on the cut of steak. A nicely marbled bone in steak needs little seasoning, just salt and pepper. Cooking is the key, not seasoning.

A lean cut, can be marinated in many different marindes, but because of the low fat/marbleing, it will usually be tougher.

Depending on the thickness of the steak, pound that meat! Then put the steak rub on it (pepper, salt, garlic, whatever else you want on it!).

By pounding the meat you open up the pores to soak in the rub even more! It's delicious!

If you have a GOOD grade and cut of steak (Black Angus, Ranchers Reserve, etc.) a simple rub will do.

For my Angus Rib Eyes, I use Shallot Pepper and Chicago Steak Seasoning.

If it's a tougher cut and grade, an acidic marinade (red wine vinegar, lemon juice, etc.) with some fresh herbs and garlic.
