That is SO not a dumb question!!

I've made my best stews and dishes by not having a major ingredient.

Instead of looking to make a red sauce for the vermicelli, do you have any oil and garlic? What about fresh herbs? Dried?

If you have milk, butter, flour and parmasean cheese, that will make a nice white sauce.

Tell us what you have to work with (you may have to dig deep in your cabinets and fridge) and we can help you think of a concoction.

You can use tomato soup the campbell kind ! Make sure add ketchup & butter this will neutralize the acidity of the sauce.

I would substitute tomato soup before i would use ketchup. put the tomatoe sauce in a pot, add spices, and any veggies you could add might be good. let it reduce a little over the heat, then cover and let simmer for ahwile, maybe 45 mins if you added vegetables.

if you have seasonings tomato soup will work fine-
too watery?-concentrated tomato soup is thicker than regular tomato sauce. just don't add the water
not seasoned enough- duh- add spices. thats what the pasta sauce companies do.

I don't like ketchup so I can't condone that one- I think it'd be too salty. but everybody has different tastebuds so you might like it.

I'm now seeing how long ago you asked the question so I'm sure you solved your problem. I'd like to know what you tred and what you thought of the result...

hmmmm, well you can, but its unlikely to fool anyone! If you have some type of Italian spice, pizza spice, etc, then maybe you could use tomoto sauce or paste easily. Tomato soup & ketchup -? that's a reach.
Can you use a different sauce-white sauce, alfredo, soy, asian?
