Hi,
First go on line and find the Chihuahua National club. Mostly all breeds recognized by AKC have National clubs.
Send them an e-mail so that you may be put in line for a rescue.
Rescue dogs for the most part were owned by people that either got in over their heads, dumped the dog on the side of the road , etc.
The National clubs rescue folks do things like take unwanted dogs off people hands, keep an eye open at the local shelters looking for the breed, or even locate lost dogs.
Rescue organizations will temperament test all dogs that come into their possession as well as taking them to the vet for a check up.
Sometimes a small fee will be asked, for example if a dog is being transported from another state or area within your state.
Rescue folks do follow up visits to make sure the dog is doing well, etc.
If you have some patients I would recommend going this route, most popular breeds have many rescues available.
Good Luck

If you cannot afford to pay much to buy the dog, how are you going to have enough to take care of it. There is heartworm preventative, dog food, shots, Vet bills, and not to mention emergency vet bills/surgeries which can run very high. For the dog's sake and yours I would wait a little and save some more. Maybe start an account in the bank just to save up for the dog. You will be more likely to save more if you have it in a desginated place. So many people adopt or buy a dog then have to take it to the pound because they cannot afford the upkeep. It is not fair to the dogs. Something to think about.

Do as much research on several breed of your interrest , and many breeders. If you want to get o a specimen of the breed you are interrested in, it will be atleast $300. I spent $200 on my first miniature pinscher. He was sick, and I just couldn't leave him. After a while he got over his cold, gained some weight and I had wormed him. A month after I purchased him, he came down with parvo, after several days and dollars with the vet, he got better. I don't recommend getting the first puppy you see. Research several breeders. Ask several question and they will too, if they are a true proffesional breeder. If a breeder avoids any questions you have, tell her that you are not interrested. A breeder will have questions for you also, because they want to know where their baby is going and will want all their concerns answered. Just like they know you will have concerns of your own. Do plenty of research on the breed of you choice and several breeders and make sure when you pick a pup that you will be able to offer that puppy a forever home. The breeder I got my female from keeps in contact with me. When I have any concerns or questions she is always there for me and my female. As for my male, I don't keep in touch with her because she was in my opinion and my vets opinion an unproffessional back yard breeder looking to make a quick buck. Well sorry I went on like that. I wish you the best of luck with what ever puppy you choose.

Check your area to see if there is a "Chihuahua Rescue". There are a lot of rescues for different breeds of dogs. There may be one for Chihuahuas. It would cost you very little! Many of them probably need good homes. Good luck!

Something to think about. The cost of feeding and vet care for your dog will probably exceed $200 quickly. Saving your money and even having extra money around in case you need it is wise.

http://www.petfinder.com and adopt a Chihuahua puppy from either a shelter or a foster home. They have purebred pups too so don't be thrown off when I said ADOPT.

It may be old fashioned, but if you really want one, why not save up and buy it when you can afford it?
