Don't you guys supposedly have seperation of church and state?

Aren't the policies more important than religious background?

Are you scared they'll close the churchs?

Because the great majority of Americans believe in God and they want a person who also believes. We as a nation want and desperately need God's Divine intervention. This country is going down fast.

Those who said the people want a president whose religious principles mirrors theirs have a good point. I think there's also a fear that atheist = immoral, or at least a lack of a moral compass.
To those who claimed that atheists have poor morals or a weak character:
our moral code does not come from a holy book. Christians are capable of monstrous sins (a few figures who rose to national prominence in recent weeks come to mind). All of us know what is the right thing to do, and whether or not we subscribe to a particular religion has no bearing on whether we act on our knowledge of right and wrong. In fact, I would be more incllined to trust an atheist over a Christian because I know the atheist is not motivated by the fear of God watching him and possibly condemning him to hell.

Being that the country is 80+% Christian I am surprised it isn't higher. Shows there is some open mindedness out there. Heck even Jerry Falwell was on the TV the other day saying the religious preferences of the leaders shouldn't necessarily matter. (and he was talking about Atheists) I almost crapped my pants when I heard that from him of all people. I was looking up for flying pigs.

Because character is important, and though I'm sure many atheists have strong character, the fact is that the presence of religious convictions make it more likely for a person's character to be strong. Sorry, but it's true.

And when most of a country's people believe in God, naturally they would want a president whose beliefs are in line with that.

By the way, "separation of church and state" doesn't mean that only atheists are qualified for high political office. Religious litmus tests for public office are unconstitutional, as you may already know.

someway those polls do no longer seem precise. human beings might say they're going to nominate a black individual yet all of us understand that isn't the case noticeably with the astonishing wing republicans. 2d, a women individuals does no longer have an 88% risk, Mormon seventy two% i do no longer think of so.

Iam a Catholic Christian. The way I vote is by who I think will do the better job, where they stand on the issues. Their religion or lack of religion plays very little in the way I vote.

No worries, only 54% of registered voters bother to vote anyway. The ones who wouldn't vote for an atheist are probably too busy wasting time praying to vote anyway, so it's quite possible to elect an atheist sometime in the near future.

half of that 53% is probably rednecks that aren't capable of thinking for themselves.

I'm an atheist, if i were president i definitely would not impose on anyone's religion. no religion claims that it should run the government, just some of the people of those various religions.

Not those reasons you listed.
To believe in something "spiritual" is a sign of hope.

We are not in ultimate power over all things we are only human. True?

If you read Gallop polls then you will also notice the growing trend of organized group "prayer and meditation" now in the work place has improved production and reduced stress.
Watch out- we are invading a business near you!

Perhaps NASA could have used that one.....LOL

There are some morals and values that can only be learned from a faith in a higher power...I wouldn't what a man/woman representing my country as president who hadn't learned those morals and values. Plus a want some one with integrity and a conservative perspective.

Real men love Jesus
