I am interested in joining the Marines, however I currently take Effexor. Am I still able to join, or does taking medication eliminate any possibility? Thanks!

I would say no to that question. Your drug is for depression and anxiety. Two behaviors the military looks at as a serious mental disorders. The military will not look at you if you are being treated for a mental disorder. Same thing goes for treatment of ADHD and ADD. Something every kid in American is being treated for nowadays, but the military won't touch with a 20 foot pole. If you cannot deal with everyday civilian life without medication the military knows it is 100% more stressful than what you already know so they don't want to take on the risk and cost of finding out you can't deal with your military life either. Sorry, that's just how things go.

Ummm, the reason that you take Effexor may keep you out. The marines is not exactly "happy time" and you will be in lots of stressful situations. But don't ask strangers on yahoo, go talk to a recruiter!

You're allowed to take medication, but not be dependent on medication and be in the service. If your recruiter asked you to stop your meds tell him to shove it. Because if you're dependent on that medication and you die from not getting it the only people that will care is your family.

you cannot be on any prescription meds when you enlist. some conditions require you to be off the meds for a year before you can enlist. Most often these are drugs used to treat mental illness.

In Army basic Training, they made us get rid of all our medicine, unless we got it from an Army doctor, or clinic, and we hadn't had a chance to do that yet, unless you can smuggle it in and make sure none of your biddies ever find out you have it, including the drill SGT, I don't know about Marine training. I do know that the marine training is worse.

Talk to a recruiter. They will be able to answer all of your questions! Good luck!
