I am considering buying a gun and my wife says that is fine as long as I dont bring the gun into the house. It is going to be a small pistol and I was wondering if anyone had any ideas about where to store it. Is it legal to keep it in a safety deposit box in a bank? Can I have a friend hold on to it or is that illegal? Anyone with any ideas would be great.

I live in Arkansas. My wife does not have irrational fears she doesnt want it in the house and I plan on respecting that wish. The car is out for the same reasons the house is out.

Bound's hubby here:

I admire your desire to respect your wife's wish.

Based on your dilemma, I presume the pistol you are looking to buy is not intended for home defense. (You have your wife for that... remember to post the signs!) Since you want a small handgun, it doesn't sound like it is for serious target shooting, nor hunting.

Keeping your handgun in a bank safety deposit box is out of the question. First off, in many states, walking into a bank or a post office with a gun is a felony. In addition, you would have to restrict your shooting to banker's hours... work might get into the way. Letting a friend keep it may not be a wise move either. It's your gun and you are responsible for it's security. How do you know that you friend would secure it and not use it, lose it or lend it out. This leads to the question... Do you have a garage that your wife would let you keep it in? Your car is out of the question, you can only transport from gun store/gunsmith to home to range.

Unless your wife relents, and allows you to keep your gun safely secured in your house, I would strongly recommend that you reconsider purchasing a gun. You have a moral and legal responsibility to insure the gun is properly secured and you can only do that in your home. Obviously, you love your wife and you do not want to cross her. Seriously, could I suggest that you consider purchasing a bow and arrow, that can be kept in your home? There are many good safes available for storing a handgun. and their purchase, in many states is deductible on your income tax. I think your best bet is to sell your wife on the idea of having a gun safe in the home and then get your gun... or lay in a supply of "House Protected by Determined Wife" signs.

Good luck.

I don't know what the gun laws are for Arkansas, but you can buy a trigger lick for the pistol. The lock will prevent anyone from firing the gun. There are several different types, so ask at your gun store. A gun safe is a good idea too, but you can buy small lock boxes that are made for pistols. (Very safe.)
As far as a safety deposit box, that's up to you. Just be sure the weapon is unloaded and has the trigger lock engaged, in a box (so nobody at the bank gets excited.) and get a deposit box that it'll fit into.

The answer to your question depends very much on where you are. The state, and even country regulations can vary widely and often extremely. If you have a proper permit to own a pistol, I would get a small safe. Simple gun safes for small pistols vary from 50-100 dollars and are easily found upon the web. If you're going to get a pistol I'd invest in a safe to store.
If you're going to be purchasing a number of firearms I'd get a heavy gun safe, quite a bit more money, but much more storage, and long gun storage for a few thousand. That can be kept out in a garage, or other attached building. And not "in the house"
As for having your friend hold onto it, again, it would depend on state and county laws regarding firearms possession.

The ONLY good idea is your home; unloaded, equipped with a pistol lock, and probably locked in a small case. You've got to get your wife on board with this, because there is NO other safe solution. It can be abused, stored irresponsibly, or stolen at someone else's house; and I doubt that most banks would let you keep a gun in a deposit box - this isn't The Bourne Identity - and it'd be fiscally irresponsible of you guys to pay that expense anyway.

I agree with smartass in that you should take your wife out to a shooting range before you do anything. If that doesn't change her mind what would be the point of buying the gun anyway.? A small pistol is only good for defense purposes so not being able to keep it where it could be used for that purpose doesn't make any sense.

As a sidenote, my aunt used to be deathly afraid of guns but, finally my Dad finally took her to a range and taught her about them and let her shoot. Now she comes out to shoot all the time and even owns a couple of her own!

Depends where you live of course, it might make sense to provide that first if you expected any kind of reasonable answer.

Why would you get a safety deposit box just to keep a gun in it? If you live in a place without strict storage laws or registration of your firearms, just give it to a friend to keep or stash it somewhere your wife won't find it.

It all depends on jurisdiction. It's like me asking what the legal drinking age is without telling anyone where I live and expecting a definitive answer.

She won't let you keep it in the house? Give her some gun safety education so that she knows guns don't have a mind of their own and that they don't randomly shoot things on their own. Gun accidents are nearly always caused by operator error.

I wouldn't keep the gun in a safe deposit box. If it's there, it's kind of pointless to even have it, and if any of the bank employees see it, they'll probably freak out and think there's a robbery going on.

Get a gun safe and keep it at your house. If you're allowed to own a gun, then you're allowed to keep it at your house.

Now I could understand some ones wife objections to target shooting in the house or dragging in dead animals to skin them in the house or even saying your girlfriend is not allowed in the house, this I can understand.

But “Guns” does she have knives in the kitchen?
A gun is as dangerous as your TV,VCR, hammer, baseball bat, your house cat more dangerous the any gun.
Wow!

My “last” wife one day out of the blue while we were watching a movie said, that one thing that will never be allowed in “MY House” .
I said what that she said a “GUN” my (at the time) 16 year old son just about fell off the sofa laughing his @ss off.
I stopped looking at her when my son asked should I show her, I told him go right ahead.
He first took her to his room and showed her all his weapons( of which was a lot).
Then he took her to our bed room and covered our bed with gun cases stacked on top of each other full of rifles, pistols and shotguns, and then showed her where the loaded ones were keep.
When they made it back to the living room where I was, she looked shocked when I asked her and where exactly do you live?
Like I told her the gun were here before she was and will be here long after she’s gone.
Now I will go a long way to avoid a fight with a woman, but no one tell me what I can or can’t have in a house I’m paying for.
Sorry it just don’t happen!

If you were to ask me where to keep your gun, I would say in your HOUSE.

That my opinion on this subject.

Please define “Tyranny”
If you thank it just applies to governments your wrong.
If anyone allows another person to rule over them whether it be male or female it is still tyranny.
You have no more right to tell your wife what to do, then she has to tell you what to do.
Who ever says “respect your wife's wish” those are wishes those are demands.
Those are the words of some one scared of their wife.
Why respect anyone who don’t respect you?

Thumb me down you subject of the Queen.

If your wife doesn't want the gun "in the house," then yes, she has irrational fears.

Tell your wife you love her, but you're not going to cater to unreasonable or psychotic demands.

*** EDIT ***

In lieu of having a gun in the house for defense, I suggest you put up signs in the front yard saying, "Beware of Wife." Tell her that once your gun is allowed in the house, the signs will no longer be necessary.
