The law applies only to minors, but really, like everyone else has basically said, you should wear one anyway. I was invoved in a stupid crash in the beginning of the month and the helmet saved my skin. I landed flat on my head. The helmet cracked down the side and a chunk went missing out the back, but you know what? Besides some bruises I was perfectly fine.
So. Helmets are optional for adults. But think of it as a seat belt. You may not always wear it, but it could save your life.

You should absolutely wear a helmet, especially if you have kids. Not only will you be setting a good example, but if you have a serious accident, you will still be alive to take care of the kids. There is nothing that angers me more than seeing a family on a bike ride. Kids are wearing helmets to be safe, and parents dont!?! Maybe because they don't think they look cool, or they feel they have good skills riding bikes. Either way, if something unforseen happens, say a car doesn't see you and happens to hit you, your chances of being alive to take care of your famliy are much higher if you have a helmet on. Wear your helmet for you and your family's protection.

Regardless if your state has a bicycle helmet law, wear one. I have seen people fall standing still and riding hard down a hill, either way, having a helmet on is for your protection and others so it's a worthy investment. Safety first!

the main deadly area of my rides is getting out of the "community". there are multiple driveways, multiple intersections, parked vehicles, youngsters, motorcycles, yet motorists look to take stop warning signs, turn indicators, velocity limits, and paying interest much less heavily than they do out on street because of the fact they think of its safer on a residential street. Even brushing aside site visitors, what occurs in the adventure that your front tire is going flat as you lean right into a turn? you're happening, and speedy, greater advantageous than possibly quicker than you may shop it or roll out of it. If there occurs to be a shrink there, you are going to break some thing, preferrably a helmet. Been there, carried out that. I in no way holiday and not making use of a helmet. My youngsters are grown, yet while they have been little, they continually wore besides, probable because of the fact they observed me and my acquaintances (all aggressive cyclists and triathletes) donning them. And specific, I had to pay slightly greater to get helmets my son perceived as cool. you will in no way be apologetic approximately donning a helmet. you're able to be able to nicely be apologetic approximately not donning one.....yet by then its too previous due. i did not placed on one while i develop into youthful, because of the fact they did not exist and that i did not be attentive to from now on useful. I survived. a number of my acquaintances did not. Helmets are affordable coverage against catastrophic suggestions harm. could desire to there be rules mandating helmet use? No, unquestionably not. i'm in choose of removing a number of those with not something between the ears to guard. If the shoe fits.....

Check your local laws. In New York State, helmets are required for kids 14 and under. Optional for adults, but it's for your own safety.

since you're really asking about a specific law... why not review the specific law that applies in your state / city; otherwise indicate where you live...
FYI, It's always a good idea to wear an ANSI or Snell approved Helmet.
