If it is still there an aluminum tab with the cid is bolted to the intake . The fourth digit of the vin number is the factory engine code , H for 390 , and Y for 360 . Being 37 years old it is highly possible that the motor has been rebuilt and may have been replaced .

Ford use to make 360's. The 360 and 390 are pretty close. People use to take 360's and put 390 heads on them to get more money out of them. Look for an engine stamp or tag then take it to a Ford dealer and they will tell you.

I only have bad news for you, the 360 and 390 are identical on the outside, In fact *nearly* all FE blocks have 352 cast into them. the only way to know which you have is to tear it down and check the bore and stroke.
On the upside, if you need to know for repair parts, it doesn't matter. since the blocks are the same all the parts will interchange. The only exceptions being certain internal parts like the heads and head gaskets. Let's face it though, if you need those parts you already know which one you have.
Good luck

they look identical, so you will have to decode it or measure the stroke.
the 360 (actually called a 361) first came out in the 58 Edsel as the FE and was later used in Ford trucks as a FT until 1976, it had the 390 bore with a 352 crankshaft, 4.05 bore and 3.5 stroke

Head gaskets are a project, yet in addition on the 390, the intake manifold gasket has a tendency to leak the place the water passages are on the top of the pinnacle. If the spark plugs are abnormally clean in one or 5 cylinders, examine the intake gasket first. previous Fart Ford Racer

look inside the door at the cin number and then pick up a haynes manual or go to the ford website and decode it... if you htink the motor has been changed find the casting number on the block. its on the drivers side torwards the front of the engine. or you can look at the drivers side head and the casting number of the head is right up front and google ford fe engines and you can find what the numbers mean.
