That's a very pertinent question! The bible is full of people that fell, got up, fell, got up, etc.

David said that he trusted God, then acted like he trusted God. Goliath was over 9 ft tall. He killed any opposing warrior he met - David knew that it was God's will that Goliath should fall AND HE ACTED ON IT. So often, we weaklings claim to trust God, but then don't tithe, "because I might come up short" or we don't speak out against something because it wouldn't be politically expedient.

Also, when David sinned (the whole Uriah thing as an example) he acknowledged his wrongdoing and asked God to forgive him. Imagine THE KING OF ISRAEL on his face in front of all the subjects, asking God to forgive him.

And as far as how he treated Saul while Saul was trying to kill him. God says that God establishes our rulers and we are to respect them and defend them and do for them as unto God. How many Christians are ready to stab our leaders in the back today? (and I don't mean only Bush right now, but Clinton in the past too)

David walked the walk that he talked.

David did covet another man's wife etc. and still was said to be after God's own heart. He serves as a prime example of the fact that we all sin and fall sometimes. The questions are do we walk with God daily? Do we repent and get back up when we fall, and continue seeking His will? He simply loved God . Being after Gods own heart doesn't have to do with our own goodness, only our love , worship, and trust in God. God bless!!!

I have to agree with Karen. Oh, and Guido, in Genesis19:32-33,
32 "Come, let US MAKE our father drink wine, and WE WILL LIE with him, that we may preserve the lineage of our father."
33 "So they MADE their father drink wine that night. And the firstborn WENT IN and lay with her father, and HE DID NOT KNOW when SHE LAY DOWN or WHEN SHE AROSE".
same with the younger daughter in verses 34 & 35. Lot was a righteous man, he just happened to be taken advantage of by his daughters. This is a question about David and how he was after God's own heart.
Save the silly rebel angst for an un-believer's question. You are making smart atheists look bad. Peace.

David truly loved the Lord with all his heart, soul, strength and mind. He sought God in every aspect of his life. To put it simply..I think the bible shows us that David wanted God to be his Best Friend..and He was..

He spent his time in worship and became intimate with God. He had a humble, passionate heart toward God and a warrior and conquer against the enemies of God and Israel. When He realized he sinned he commited himself to the mercy of God. Look in the Psalms and you will see his heart in worship, prophecy in foretelling the sufferings of Christ by the Holy Spirit, acknowledgment of sins and weakness when we fall, and the true judgments of God to come to mention a few. Hope this helps!

David was not sinless, but he loved God and worshipped Him openly and with all of his heart and was dependant on God in all things

He was not ashamed of Him whom he believed in. He also was a very humble man before the Lord and understood his hoplessness without him.

He was a good boy, and man, and through his understanding that it was God above that gave him his might and vision, he was thus God's chosen to build the greatness of Israel and thus prepare the way for Solomon, and Jesus.

Didn't he covet another man's wife? Uriah the Hittite, says Wikipedia. He's credited with killing "10s of thousands", that's more than Saul, that's something.
