Tithing isn't only monetary. It goes to support the work of the Church. This may be helping the poor, feeding the hungry around the world, supporting the clergy...or even paying the electric bills for the church. Those are all necessary. But the point of tithing, is to make a sacrifice. When I give money each week...it's not always easy. But then I remember I spent money on movies, entertainment, a new pair of shoes I didn't really need...and I think I can certainly give money to help with God's work.
But I do think it includes volunteering a church or helping others in some way...but it should still involve a sacrifice of some kind, that's where they reward is.

Some people have a ministry of helps. Some don't. Some have no money. We tithe and give first fruit offerings. The latter directly to those that minister to us. We tithe to the church we go to. If a man can't marry or bury us we don't give to them cause they can't come to the hospital or come pray with us and hold our hand. Our belief, with a few exceptions, eg Focus on the Family etc...
Nowhere was giving limited to money. We just don't bargain much with produce, grain, or livestock, and so we primarily use money. Any way a person can give or love or care is bound to be blessed by God.

I do think that giving money is something that is important. However, I do think there are othe things you can do for a church. I make very little money because I am a hostess. I get half of minimum wage because of my tip money that I share with other people that work there. I cannot give as much as I want to give to the church, but there are other gifts that everyone has. Some people are excellent at teaching, but others may be excellent at praying for others. Some may be great encouraging spirits. And the list goes on and on. It is not a version of tithing; however, it is using the gifts that God gave you and blessing your church with them and, in turn, helping the kingdom grow. You can absolutely give to your church in many ways. In fact, we are asked to do this in scripture by using the spiritual gifts that we are given.

Tithing is 10% of your income. Offerings are above the tithing. Volunteering and service in the church is not optional. You want to make your church stronger with your monetary and time contribution.
Volunteering is not instead of tithing, but it is really between you and God. : )

Although most pastors teach it... tithing is not required in my opinion ,We should give.. some even more then ten percent.
but for pastors to tell Christians that God will not bless them if they don't give a tithe ( the word tithe means tenth by the way)
is very deceitful.... the new testament says give as is purposed in your heat which means as you feel lead by God.
pastors very often use the bible scripture Malachi chap 3 verse 8 which talks about people who don't tithe robing God and being cursed with a curse. This tactic is used to motivate with both fear and shame and very wrong and unbiblical in my opinion... not to mention if you read the entire book of Malachi you will see it is totally taken out of the context in the way in which its used. Also... I cant emphasize enough... we should give, please don't get me wrong... Jesus said for us to give, our time, talents, income , etc.. but what I have a problem with is these pastors telling people they have to give a tenth, and even prod those who are struggling financially to give anyways so God can bless them out of there financial lack..
I'm quite sure there are many many Christians who don't agree with me and feel tithing is required but through my research, praying and convictions I just don't feel tithing is a requirement
hope i helped... thanks

I see it this way: all of it's really the Lord's anyways, all He asks is 10% in return...the commandment to tithe is in the bible. Malachi Will a man rob God? 2 Cor 9:7, Matt 8 etc. But if your not giving it to his church then your still not giving it to him are you?
So for anyone who isn't certain if they're in the Lord's Church it would be better just to help others.

When you become a member of my church, you commit to tithing and actually volunteering in some capacity. I attend a very large church (about 5000 members) so it takes a lot to make church service happen every weekend. I don't mean to make it sound like a big production or anything, but to minister to everyone we have to have go to more technical lengths than other churches. I know a lot of Christians dislike the huge screens and large sound systems, but people aren't going to be ministered to if they can't see or hear. And to make that happen, someone has to work all that sound and video equipment. We have greeters who welcome people at the door, and I personally serve in the children's ministry. They ask you to commit to volunteering twice a month, which is doable for most people. But I know lots of faithful people who are there every weekend. You also making a commitment to tithing 10% of your income. Our membership process is much more drawn out than other churches, but it ensures we have faithful and dependable people who are willing to give both time and money to help reach out to people.

If you give, God is happy about your way of giving. They get you to tithe, To help continue to help the church stay up and continue it's ministries. God also wants to see if you will give like he gives to you. But i have asked this question myself. And god's does see your giving. In a way that you can give. And he blesses you for that. Now there is preachers out there will make you feel the only way to get a blessing is to give all your money. But you are fine and god reads your heart and he does see how you give, And you are blessed.

Our tithing goes to helping others in various ways (for instance, helping with the Katrina Relief). We do also volunteer and help others and give in other ways. We help with the adopt-a-family program and give gifts during Christmas for families who can't really provide as good a Christmas as they'd like for their kids. We donate things and help out in all sorts of ways.
None of the money we give in our church goes to the church leaders. No one in my church gets paid for anything. It's all done for the sake of serving God. Not even our Church President, the Prophet gets paid. All of our money goes to helping others. Some also give extra in addition to tithing that goes to helping build our churches. We give 10% tithing, and then if we want to give more, we do and we write down what we want it to go toward.

I do tithe because that's what I feel that the Lord has laid on my heart to do, but I really don't think the New Testament supports tithing, to be honest with you. I really believe that the Lord wants us to give cheerfully (2 Cor.9:7), not grudgingly (2 Cor.9:7), freely (Matt.10:8), and not of necessity (2 Cor.9:7), sacrificially (2 Cor.8:2), from the first fruits of what we receive (Prov.3:9-10), proportionately to what we receive from God (1 Cor.16:2), and most importantly according as one purposes in his heart (2 Cor.9:7).
I definately think that giving should include our time, talents and treasures (money).
