When I turn it on by the button on the set, it comes on for a few secs with sound and no picture, there is also lots of clicking noises.

Does anybody know what might be wrong and if I can fix it or I will need a TV engineer?

Its a Sony FD Trinitron Wega Wide Colour TV.

As always even the best of us can only make guesses !. Gee I wish I could conduct a repair business from a forum like this !
No overheads no expensive test equipment --no workshop even !!
However to pull one out of the bag here is my guess ! The relay that switches the set from standby is " chattering " . needs the contacts cleaning. Course as I said that's only an educated guess.
Fecomosis has the logical approach though , he will be able to look up the fault code !! and give you the most likely fault !
After that though it still has to be repaired by experienced personnel .
Cheers Pete
PS. Since I am retired now I do not have access to the fault codes for Sony !!. Pete

There are lots of things out there wrong with TV, but hasn't there always been? I can remember years ago seeing Three Stooges and Tom and Jerry beating each other up. There also used to be large amounts of smoking and drinking on "family" shows. I think the big thing is that we as parents have to communicate with our kids on the issues. Some parents want to use the TV as a babysitter or a way to get their kids out of their hair. That's sad. I have a ten year old daughter and she watches some television, like Hannah Montana and stuff, and it makes me really proud because sometimes she'll see a character talking back to their parents or being flirty - but she will comment to me that they're not doing good things. It becomes a great teaching tool to talk about situations that might arise. TV has some really bad things out there. We just have to monitor what is being watched.

Do you leave it on standby instead of switching it off?

My Panasonic 28" went through spell of having no picture and making static-like clicking noises after being left on standby. Got so bad, was looking at replacing it. Nowadays, I switch it off at the set, and the problem seems to have gone away.

Sounds like you got hit by a power surge. I would suggest calling Sony and have them do some free troubleshooting for you over the phone. With that model it would probably be cheaper to have it replaced then get it fixed.

How many times does the standby light flash? It should flash in a sequence.

Model number..

I had a similar thing happen with my tv a few years back - although there weren't clicking noises. We got it fixed, but was told that "it needed a new frame"... I have no idea what that means

find a local tv repair guy and go to ther shop and ask them, they will tell you how much it will cost to fix, and they will do it a lot cheaper then someone you call out. plus if it happens again you know the person who has a shop isnt going to jsut disapear!
