They should try Atopica. Its a new drug on the market that helps dogs with allergy and dermatitis. You can try buying booties for your dog for when he goes outside. Did your vet rule out a food allergy. If not you should try that. Most dogs that have outside allergies also have a food allergy. This is where they will place your dog on Hill's Prescription Z/D strictly for 6months. If the sores go away then it's a food allergy. Also, if your vet can't get this problem to go away then you should really go to another vet for a second opinion. Also when you do you should get one with a Boarded vet dermatologist. You can find one by looking up your states vet association. I live in ct and ours is called CT veterinary medical association (CVMA). Yours will have a similar name. Good luck!!

Swollen Dog Paws Allergies

Hm tough one, I sympathise. Allergies probably are the worst buggers to pin down, and if you have a dog that's basically allergic to vegetation, what CAN you do? Keep on with the Benadryl of course if it helps.

It sounds like you've done all the things you should do. I can only suggest you do some kind of research into herbal remedies - there are times when medicine can only go so far! I hope some people with experience in that post some suggestions for you - but do run anything by your vet first, just to check it's OK. They're usually happy to give alternatives the OK or not.

The only other thing I can think of is getting some of those little dog booties for your dog when he's outside! You know the ones you can buy that lace up, for instance when your dog has a bandaged paw that needs to be protected? They come in sizes and everything, your vet can probably supply them! OK it might look silly but I doubt your dog would care, and if it does help it'd be worth it.

Good luck!

I'll bet it's a food allergy and not environmental. I suggest changing your dog's food to something without wheat, corn, or soy...the top three allergens for dogs. Many dogs are also allergic to beef and chicken. I feed my dog Solid Gold Wolf King that is made with bison and has no wheat, soy, or corn.

If you do decide to try changing the food, do it gradually, like three parts current food, to one part new food, and then increase the new food gradually...over two weeks time. This will keep your dog from getting an upset tummy on top of the ouchie paws.

However, dogs can be sensitive to cleaning solutions and chemicals that are used in our yards for grasses and for pest control. Keep track of WHEN your dog's feet itch, it constant? Is it when he comes in from outside? It may take a while, but if you're extra observant, you might find it out.

I'd try changing food first, it's the easiest to control :)

Good luck!!! :)

Hate to tell you this, but if you've removed all the stuff he's allergic to in your yard, you either have to make him an indoor dog, or you probably will have to move.

Did the vets say use benadryl. I've used that for when my dog had a bee sting and her face swelled up huge and it worked well. But I wonder if they couldn't try a prescription allergy med, like Allegra. They may not want to, because it's never been tested and they are afraid to be sued. I had a rabbit once that had a flea problem and the vet wouldn't prescribe Advantage because it hadn't been tested on rabbits yet.

This time of the year the grass has heavy dew on it. There is lots of pollen in the air and so it falls on the wet grass.
My dog has had this problem!
I would wash her paws off every time she would come in the house. Just use warm water no soap. The soap could cause the sores to hurt and burn. Make sure the paws are dried off when done. I know the best thing to get the sores to heal is for the dog to lick them. But also this can irritate the area as well.
My Vet. would give my dog steroid shots and that did help.

Hope your dog gets better.

Mine would get better after the grass became dry.

Change his food. I know this sounds weird since it's an allergy to things in the environment, but changing the food can help a ton. Your vet may not agree, but in this time of food scares, just tell your vet to deal. ;-)

The best bet for food allergies is to learn to feed raw: http://www.rawlearning.com/

But if you're leery of that, consider some of the premium brands of dog foods that use alternative protein sources, like venison or lamb, and that don't use any grains.

Two good brands are:

Wysong: http://www.wysong.net/

Natures Variety: http://www.naturesvariety.com/

Try going to the garden center and get a product called Sevens Dust. This can be put on the dog. Get the powder down to the skin. Also treat all areas with the powder and wash all bedding. You may have to do this several times but it should help. It is really important to treat the yard and sleeping area of the dog to get rid of the fleas. You will have to do it more than once since the fleas lay eggs and new ones hatch out every day.

Have you tried dog booties? It would at least provide a barrier between his feet and the grass
would give him freedon to still go places like a tight weave nylon this place may be able to offer recommendations you may want a few pair so you can wash after each outing
