I'm going on a long car trip from Texas to New Orleans, and I need a way to stay up that long. Coffee won't be readily available, but I might be able to bring some with me, but it'll get cold. I was wondering if energy gum or energy drinks work, and if not, what should I try instead? This trip is in less than a week so your help is welcome!!

Alot of people are suggesting stopping and getting out, but that's not the issue, and I'm not the one driving so no one will get hurt if I do stay up that long. I just don't want to be asleep on a charter bus full of 14 year olds.

I would stop and rest if your worried you wouldn't want to fall asleep and injure yourself or anyone else.

Yeah it's not the healthiest thing to stay awake that long - although doing it once won't kill you, haha. You'll be miserably tired when you get to your destination and it will likely take a couple days to recover, so it might not be worth it. But you could bring Red Bull or other energy drinks - they come in smaller cans and have something like 3 times the amount of caffeine that coffee does. Or other sodas with caffeine. You can always get sugar-free or diet if you don't want all the sugar. Maybe if you drink enough you'll have to stop and pee frequently enough to keep you awake, haha.

red bull the sugar free kind keeps me wide awake...but really that's not healthy. not only will you be running on a lack of sleep but studies have shown that not sleeping for a long time has the same effects as being heavily intoxicated. You might want to tell us what roads you're taking so we don't put ourselves in danger. You're better off taking the money for energy drinks and stay at a hotel for a night.

I drive frequently from the bottom of Mexico to OKC -- From Baltimore MD to OKC --- and have driven from OKC to New orleans.

It is not a crazy drive. There are lots of places to stop and get Jolt Cola, Red Bull, and all the coffee you like.

The best bet is to be well packed inside your house the night before. Then get up early exert yourself packing. You can shower and start early fresh and you wont be antsy to get out of the car for a while to come.

If you really can't afford to stop for a nap...make sure you keep the window cracked. The cold air will keep you alert. Bring along lots of Red Bull, and stop for coffee whenever possible.

Nothing really works for me. Stop every once and awhile and run. especially if it's cold out. Eat sugar, bring a big thermus full of coffee.. umm, try not to turn the heat on..

If you stop and eat, eat something light. Also, try and stop every three hours or so to walk around - Any energy drink will help.
