I think it refers to the fact that butterflies flutter busily from flower to flower (not always in a straight line) without any apparent goal or favourites. They are blown off course by the slightest breeze.
Very pretty to look at, fun to watch but no good for a deep friendship.

Social butterfly is a word addressed to a person who is on to parties... One good example is Paris Hilton. She is sometimes called a "Social Butterfly".

the term comes about when a butterfly gets high and gets too much action and go around spreading pollen indiscriminately
