I am planning on going abroad with "AFS" and I don't know whether i should go to the Argentina or Chile. My goal is to learn Spanish better and to be surrounded by culture and having fun! I also noticed that Argentina have 85% of the people descended from Europeans while in chile It is the the mestizos that are 85%.

That's a very tough question because both countries are undoubtebly amazing. They are both pretty advanced and refined (specially for Latin American standards), they both have BEAUTIFUL landscapes, both populations are very educated, etc.

But straight to the point. I would choose Argentina because:
1) Everything is MUCH cheaper, you'd be surprised how cheap everything is (mostly because they suffered a huge devaluation a few years ago).

2) Argentina is probably a bit more liberal and more "fun" with more things to do (specially Buenos Aires).

So even though both countries are amazing, Argentina has an edge on those 2 and therefore I would choose Argentina.

Oh my gosh I am so jealous of you! I would love to have an excuse (and the money) to go back to South America. I loved both Chile and Argentina when I was there. The accent is a bit different in both countries. They say their "ll" with a "j" instead of a "y" sound in Argentina. I had a little trouble understanding the Spanish in Chile because it seemed like a lot of people dropped the last consonant off of words and I felt like they were mumbling .... that could be my mediocre Spanish skills, though!!! Both countries are drop dead gorgeous and the people tend to be incredibly friendly and easy-going. You mentioned that Argentina is a bit more European and that's totally true, so take it into consideration. The night life is SO great in both Santiago and Buenos Aires, although you'll probably have a few more choices in Buenos Aires. Bariloche (skiing/snowboarding) and Mendoza (wine country) are awesome in Argentina and I have always wanted to go to Patagonia, but I've never made it! Anyways, have a terrific time wherever you end up. I promise that you'll have fun in which-ever country you choose!

Well, if you're looking for indigenous cultures, pick Chile. If you're looking for Euro ones, pick Argentina. To tell the truth, there are probably just as many Italians as there are Spanish people in Argentina.

Argentina also has yerba mate, if you like it. I don't believe it's a big thing in Chile. But both have dulce de leche, so they're both alright by me!

You have to choose Argentina. I am from Argentina and all the people here are very kind with tourists, and there is a lot of people who can speak English.
If you come to Buenos Aires, Santa Fe or the western cities, you'll find the most part of the people are descended from Europeans; if you go to the Patagonia maybe you'll find more indigenas.
Remember: Argentina has excellent food, we all love football soccer and we are kind with tourists.

Good luck

Both countries are great. And you can have fun in both of them. But, in my opinion if you are focus in improving your Spanish speaking skill, I will go Chile.

It depends on what interests you...if it is the plight of the indigenous cultures, you have to go to Chile.....try to meet Rigoberta Menchu while you can. Famous cultural leader.

If you are interested in fine dining and plastic surgery and would like to stay in a fancy exchange student host family home who depend hand and foot on their servants, go to Argentina.

Both are nice places to see. I would personally go to Chile, to experience a different life other than our own, full of modern conveniences.

Australia or Sweden... Australia just because it is different (not in a bad way, but in a Southern Hemisphere way) and Sweden for the women and it is a place where some of my ancestors are from...
