It depends on the individual and the severity of the anxiety or depression. It could be immediately, it could take a day or two. If you're taking ativan, I would recommend googling James Allen, and reading his book "As A Man Thinketh". You can download it free off the internet. It will only take 1 1/2 hours to read. My bet is it will do more for you than the ativan. It did for me.

It took me about 20-30 minutes to feel a 0.5mg pill 'kick in' and calm me down. It was given to me for my anxiety and panic attacks. I was told to take it 'as needed' when I felt a panic attack coming on. My symptoms did not diminish entirely, it only worked for an hour or two at a time. It's a fast acting drug so it didn't help me with my constant and extreme anxiety, only if I had a sudden 'attack' on top of my general anxiety. Before I was given the meds, I was having up to 20 'attacks' a day, some lasting only minutes, some took over an hour before I could calm down. I was very jumpy and any sudden noise would give me a minor anxiety attack. Ativan was NOT helpful since I had repeated attacks all day long. I became addicted to it for that reason. I had to keep taking the pills because they wear off pretty fast. As soon as it wore off, I'd feel the anxiety coming back. Soon, I was taking 3 or 4 pills at a time since I didn't feel they were working anymore. It got out of control.

I was switched to Klonopin because it has a longer half-life. I don't feel it 'kick in' or wear off. It just stays in my system and keeps me feeling 'level'. I just don't feel the constant anxiety anymore nor have I had a panic attack since taking the Klonopin. I take 1mg in the morning and 0.5mg at night. I never feel the need to take any more than what I'm prescribed. I also take 30mg of Lexapro.

It should work instantanously. Benzodiazepines such as ativan aren't like antidepressants that take a few weeks to work. Read this and you will learn everything that you want to know about benzodiazepines like ativan http://www.benzo.org.uk/manual/
