I was recently put on probation . I get a random drug/alcohol urine test and I need to know what type of test i am getting. My lab slip said a ethanol urine, I assume that is a regular alcohol urine test. However there is a new test, EgT that is very sensitive and can detect alcohol use even from mouthwash for up to 80 hours. If you get the EgT test, do they tell you to stay away from certain products? I was not informed either way and I would like to know without having to ask my PO. Any advice? Anyone being tested?

Well, you are probably correct in saying i should just talk to my PO. My conditions never even stated that I couldn't drink alcohol, if I hadn't seen the ethanol test on my lab slip, I would've assumed i was safe in doing that. I hate to ask, because I don't want him thinking I am trying to beat the test. I just think I need to be better informed if it is the EgT than I need to stay away from food and products with alcohol in them as well as alcohol consumption. Why aren't they more specific???

Probation tests are usually more in-depth than those for employers of any sort, except maybe government, where they may even test you for high intelligence, as they reportedly shy away from. You can't go to jail for failing a test unless he tells you in advance, for example, threatens you to quit your meth addiction. If you test positive for alcohol, which, in the case of mouthwash the night before, you would not for a urine test, although you may potentially fail a breathalizer if you spray some mouthwash RIGHT before or into the tester, it'd be because you drank beer or wine or liquor (including moonshine!!!) recently, I wouldn't be experienced in this field, however.

Probation Alcohol Test

Somebody gave you bad information. There simply is not a UA test for alcohol that is retroactive to 80 hours. And if there were, it would not be admissible in a probation-violation proceeding if it could not distinguish methyl alcohol (used in hygiene/beauty products) from ethyl alcohol (an intoxicant).

This is an honest question and one which your PO could happily answer without suspecting you of any violation.

Best of luck.

I've been tested for a job that required a drug test.
as long as you don't drink alcohol or do drugs your urine test will be fine. nothing to worry about.

So, why do you drink mouth wash? Did you think you could drink this way without getting caught? Boy, you got a bad case of the DT's.

Yes stay away from mouthwash with alcohol on the label. Another thing to stay away from is cologne, or aftershave, anything you think might have alcohol in it.
