How far would an average person feel comfortable walking to a location from a public transit point? How far would be too far and they'd likely need transit other than walking?

1/2 mile? 1 mile? 2 miles?

Thanks!

You already have the answer just look at the subway map for NYC. www.mta.nyc.ny.us In NYC there are 20 up/ downtown blocks[ the distance from a numbered street to a numbered street] to a mile and 5 crosstown blocks per mile [ from an avenue to an avenue] -so now you know why cab fares are based on a 1/5 standard
The #1 train- The Broadway local - stops at
14, 18, 23, 28, 34, 42, 50, 59, 66, 72, 79, 86,103,110,116, 125,................ Sts
So you have a basic distance which is around a radius of 1/4 mile - 5 blocks at an easy walking speed of 20 minutes per mile or 5 minutes
I think if the distance exceeds 8-10 minutes people won't use it.

i'm 18 and i walk for miles, i prefer to walk 4 miles to town then 4 miles back to save money from getting a bus. so thats 8 miles, then about 2 in town, and about 1-2 miles from generally walking around lol.

My record is 20 miles in a day, took me 5 1/2 hours to do.

But, it really depends on your age, your fitness, etc. If you wanna walk far, slowly build up to great distances, and give yourself something to take your mind of the walk, listen to a mp3 player, think to yourself, look at your surroundings. Its down to the individual person.

I think half a mile would be optimal. I'm thinking of going to work. If it's a one time thing than I think anybody could manage 2 miles. It all depends on the persons energy, shoes and what they carry with them.

Depends on what I'm walking to... if I am trying to get to work, I want my transit point within five minutes; if I'm doing a bar crawl I can stagger for miles :)

I agree with VW. About a 1/2 mile is enough for me.

Cheers :-)
