Get an Elizabethan collar for him. It is that cone-shaped collar that prevents him from licking anything. Perhaps if he can't get to his rear for a while, it will get a chance to heal and he will stop licking. Poor guy, I hope this helps.

It very likely could be worms. They irritate the intestines, as well as the anus, depending upon which type they are. Round worms look like little pieces of rice, and tapeworms are a little longer, and flat. The problem is that you don't usuallly see the worms. Worms can also make a cat get sick to its stomach. Has your cat recently been on any antibiotics? (Within the last few months). If it has, antibiotics can upset the balance of good bacteria than normally live in the intestines. When this happens the animal (or person) can suffer from an infection of Candida. Candida can also cause diahhrea. In the event that your cat was recently on antibiotics, then you might consider looking Candida up on the internet. Usually giving Acidophilous helps Candida. I would look on the internet for how much to give to a cat. Additionally, if the cat has diahhrea for any reason, that would probably cause an itchy rectum, and the cause of the diahhrea would have to be determined by a vet who seems diligent in helping you.
Another thing to consider: Have you always had your cat on the very same cat food? If so, has it always had this problem? In that case, you may want to try a new food. Have you changed foods, recently? Did this start sometime after having changed foods? We had a cat who had bleeding from the rectum, and it stopped when we changed foods. (But make sure the cat DOES NOT HAVE WORMS.)

If at first you don't succeed....
.....take him BACK to the vet!
If the vets don't hear from you they're going to assume everything's OK! They'll want to know if what they did didn't help, so take him BACK so they can try something else!
What is this whole thing on here with people assuming if vets don't get it right the first time then that's that? Vets aren't miracle workers, but they're still going to be able to do more than the people on here - you know, we who haven't even SEEN the cat's butt and have no idea what's going on with it,
I mean why the heck has someone suggested a remedy for cuts and scrapes? We don't even know if it IS cuts and scrapes, what if it's constipation or diarrhoea or worms or.....

.hi!!!! i was just having the same problem with my cat.we asked our family vet to take a look at our cats butt.they didn't see anything wrong but i continue to see little worms. so i checked out another vet, always get a second opinion if it was you having problems you would get more advice.treat your cat how you would want to be treated.please don't use our meds. for kitty unless you were directed by your vet.

Go back to the vet, or go to another vet for a second opinion. Your cat is uncomfortable and needs medical attention.

Its strange that the vet didn't really know what the problem is. it's alright to get him a collar that would prevent him from licking, he may be itchy, try putting some Vaseline on it, and see if that helps, if not then I think that maybe you should try a different vet.

Maybe he has worms. Our kitty did that and the vet wormed him, and it stopped. But you said you took him to the Vet.

Go to your local feed store and tell them that you need some Lanolin-Rich Antiseptic Ointment. Its for cuts scrapes and burns. I used this to get my dog from eating the skin off of her foot. Its really thick and doesn't taste very good! Hope that helps, it can't hurt to try!
