Me and my wife made a total of about $12,000 this past year our standard deduction is about 4500 plus she claimed 0 on her taxes so they were taking the maximum amount out of her check should we worry about filing or not?

YES you should file. Your standard deduction as a married couple is $10,300, and added to two exemptions of $3300 each, your taxable income is zero, so you'd get back everything that was withheld for federal taxes. If you don't file, you don't get it back.

The above answer assumes that none of your joint income was from self-employment. If it was, then you're REQUIRED to file if that income is over $400 and might or might not owe taxes.

Since you only made $12,000, then I would file just to get your federal withholding back! If they were taking out the maximum on your wife's checks, then you will probably get a large refund. Don't let the gov't keep your money when you are entitled to getting it back! Just fill out a tax return and see what the results are. I'm sure you'll be surprised!

Here's a link to the IRS free efile page. You qualify for free efiling and it is so much easier to input the info on the computer and submit it, than filling out a return by hand and mailing it in! :)

With a total income of $12,000 a married couple is not required to file an income tax return.

However, in order to get a refund of taxes withheld, you must file a return.

If you file a return with a refund, you have three years to file it from the due date of the return, or you lose the refund.

There will be no penalties or interest. Get that return in so you get your withholding back.
