No. The war was won.

We're just losing the peace. The big problem was after Saddam was overthrown, the US decided to completely abolish the entire machinery of government in Iraq. This went even further than what the Allies did in Germany in 1945, and it fuelled the insurgency (disaffected ex-baathists who were now out of a job) and created a vaccum for the religious militias to exploit.

trouble is, I don't think there is a short term solution to this.

The war was won, it's the peace that's being lost. It's slightly more than a technical difference.

The coalition forces are not an occupying power, but there at the request of the Iraqi government.
(Lest worse befall!)
The opportunities which may have been there for reconstruction and and an orderly handover were missed, and it is not possible to wind back the clock.
Doctors and teachers are fleeing Iraq.
10% of the population of Jordan is now Iraqi.

"with these people the only way to win is to beat them into submission. " says .
Well, so far that approach is generating terrorists faster that it is eliminating them.
There were warnings about that before the war started.

Can the Iraqi government command loyalty and produce stability, allowing the American and British forces to disengage? It's the only visible hope, but it's a thin one. This week six ministers left the cabinet and three have been accused of corruption. In Basra the British are still having to arrest police officials, while planning to hand over the territory to them...

Turn the question on yourself, all non Islamic forces pull out of Iraq and Afghanistan ,what happens then ,we have GENOCIDE.Arab killing arab women returned to permanent purdah the chinese decide to join an oil boycott, the russians refuse to supply anything a total embargo,we have children dying inthe streets just like Rwanda and Biafra because you cant eat oil the solution lets invade the rich Saudis they still cant feed the children you cant grow food with oil lets annihalate Israel ,poisoned earth we stillcant feed the old ,how do you intend to win this war nuke AMERICA you cant bake bread from sand ,this war will continue till the arab not the religious zealot tires of seeing his children dying in the streets, just look at the average of the people of Iran and Iraq and ask why the majority of the religious leaders excede this average by 20 years ,.It may be bad now but it could get a lot lot worse.Incidentally how many mullahs, imams and ayatollahs have been suicide bombers and died for the holy jihad.

This is the war that was never meant to happen. When America invaded, Saddam and his pals were meant to roll over and die and it would be a ticker-tape parade for the Yanks and peace ever after.

Yeah, right. There has never been any chance of "winning" this "war" because it is not a conventional good-army-versus-bad-army conflict. Bush still doesnt understand that, but eventually he will be forced to. There was mass killing before the invasion, there are mass killings now and there will be mass killings afterwards. Thats the way things happen in that part of the world. Sometimes the killers and the victims vary but killing is a way of life (if youll pardon the expression) among the tribes there. And if anything is going to unite them, it will be the desire to get rid of the foreign infidel invaders.

The only way out for the Americans is to slink through the back door, tails between their legs. Think Vietnam x 1 trillion.

I'm from england so if the usa says it's lost you can guarantee our government will follow suit. It's been lost since it started. Our troops are spread so thin in afghanistan and iraq that it is an ideal time to attack us. we've no-one here to protect us citizens. Every few days more young men and women are dying and what for? Babies are growing up without ever knowing their mums/dads it is a disgrace. we are not even wanted over there.

Have you ever talked to any of the vets? Many of them say yes it is, because they are taking fire from the average citizens over there. They cannot tell who the real terrorist are versus the people that just don't want us there. If you want to hear it from the veterans themselves, you need to watch some of their interviews. Check out the following websites for information and interviews with vets against the war.

I think it is about time we brought our troops home. If George Bush Senior finished the job he started years ago, our lads would be still alive. As for Tony Blair he is Bush's lap dog trying to go out in a blaze of glory. He might change his mind if his son was sent out there.

Since SAD HUSSAIN came to power in 1965, 3 million innocent people were put to death by daily execution. We care about what happened to 6 million Jews under a dictator, peace will come eventually, that's what American, French, Polish, German, and British troops are there for.

The War was over long ago with the toppling of Saddam's government.

This is an insurgency created by remnant forces and others as they converged on a weakened area. The term 'War in Iraq' is really media hype.
