I cheat a little & use a store made deep dish pie crust. In large skillet, brown 1lb hamburger with chopped onions. Layer in bottom of pie crust. Spoon over 2 tablespoons tomato sauce. Add 1 pkg frozen peas, then spoon over mashed potatos. Top with shredded cheese & bake @ 325 for about 30 - 40 minutes.....I love to serve with tossed salad & homemade garlic bread!

Ingredients:
Mashed Potatoes
2 cans of corn (NOT creamed corn)
1 lb. hamburger
optional: onions (reccomended if you like them), peas, and carrots.
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Get out a deep dish pan and put the hamburger on the bottom, the corn in the middle, and if you would like sprinkle some cheese on top. Then put the mashed potatoes on top of that. Cook for 10 minutes. Then put the oven on broil and add a little butter to the top. Cook for an additional 10 minutes or until it browns on top.

First you brown hamburger and onions together and set it aside. Boil potatoes until tender and then mash them with a little milk and butter. Using a glass rectangular baking dish, layer the bottom with the brown hamburger meat, then add a can of french cut green beans, then add a can of whole kernal corn, then add a can of tomato sauce, then spread the mashed potatoes on top and cover with shredded cheese and bake at 425 degrees for 20 minutes or until cheese has melted. You can add other ingredients that suit your taste buds.

Shepherd's Pie Recipe
Shepherd's Pie and Cottage Pie are very similar. Shepherd's Pie is made from lamb whereas Cottage Pie uses beef. In this version of Shepherd's Pie we use leftover Roast Lamb.
500 grams / 1 lb of leftover roast lamb (or roast beef)
1 tablespoon of tomato sauce (ketchup)
½ to ¾ cup of leftover gravy (jus roti) or packet-mix gravy
1 tablespoon of freshly chopped parsley
3 to 4 large potatoes
1 tablespoon of butter
salt and pepper
Preheat the oven to 180°C, 350°F or gas mark 4. Trim excess fat off the leftover roast and chop very finely by hand or in a food processor. Mix the roast with the tomato sauce and enough gravy to make a thick paste, stir in the chopped parsley, a little salt and pepper and spoon into a pie dish.
Peel the potatoes, chop into quarters and place in a medium saucepan with enough cold water to just cover the potatoes. Add a little salt and bring to the boil, reduce the heat and simmer for 10 to 15 minutes or until the potatoes are tender. When the potatoes are cooked, drain and place back on the heat for a few seconds to let any extra water evaporate from the potatoes. Mash the potatoes with one tablespoon of butter until the potato is very creamy - add a little milk if needed. Add salt to taste.
Spoon or pipe the creamy mashed potato over the minced roast mixture. Sprinkle with grated cheese if desired and bake for 20 to 30 minutes or until the potato is golden and the pie is heated through.
(Serves 4)

Fry up some ground hamburger or lamb ... the traditional recipe is lamb. Add salt and pepper to that, and finely chopped onions if you like.
While you are doing this, peel and boil at least 6 large potatoes for about 20 minutes.
When they are done, add a tablespoon of butter and 2 tablespoons of milk and mash or whip them up.
Put all the hamburger or lamb on the bottom of a caserole dish.
Add a layer of creamed corn.
Add a layer of fresh or cooked peas.
Add a layer of mashed potatoes.
Cover with tinfoil.
Bake in over for about 15 minutes on 375.
Uncover for about 5 minutes if you like the potatoes lightly browned.
Enjoy!

Real Shepherd's Pie
A traditional British dish, Cottage pie may be made by the same method substituting lamb and lamb stock with beef and beef stock,it may also be topped with grated cheese and tomato before browning, My recipe serves 2 hungry people with good appetites, but it can serve 4.
by Andy Mann
2-4 servings 55 min 15 min prep
Change to: servings US Metric
1 lb ground lamb (or minced lamb&mutton)
1 onion
1 Knorr lamb cube (or own lamb stock) or 2 Oxo lamb cubes (or own lamb stock)
plain flour or cornflour (for thickening)
2 lbs potatoes
butter
salt & pepper
fresh mint (optional)
Brown meat and chopped onion together for about 5 minutes, add stock and simmer slowly, occasionally stirring until cooked, about 20 minutes.
Mix 2-3 teaspoons of flour or cornflour to a smooth cream with water and slowly add to meat mixture over a low heat stirring continuously until thickened.
Pour into ovenproof dish and set aside, allowing to cool, depending on the quality of the meat used you should not need to skim the fat, however, this is to personal taste.
Peel, boil and mash potatoes with salt, pepper, freshly chopped mint if required, and a generous knob of butter.
Cover the meat mixture with the potato and bake in a medium oven for 30-40 minutes.
If required dish can be browned under a grill.
Serve with fresh vegetables.
I also like thickly sliced fresh bread and butter with my Real Shepherds Pie.

Steak Shepards Pie:
1½ hours 30 min prep
4-6 servings
2 1/2 lbs steak (you can use the cheap stuff here because its all mixed in)
2 large white onions
3 garlic cloves
1 bunch scallions
1 bunch parsley
3 tablespoons fresh thyme
2 large carrots
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 (10 1/2 ounce) can sweet corn
1 cup white wine
5 large potatoes
butter
milk
shredded cheese
1. My advice is always to prechop everything. It makes it so much easier. This way also you can enjoy a glass of the wine you're cooking with while you're cooking!
2. heat oil and cook steak in large saucepan for ten min on medium heat stirring occasionally. The goal is to cook the meat slowly to seal in the flavor.
3. In a separate saucepan cube all potatos, cover with water and boil until soft - usually 15 to 20 min if you cube small enough.
4. Add all onions, carrots and scallions to the steak and saute about 5-10 minute.
5. Add Herbs, corn to the meat/veg mixture and saute another 5 minute.
6. Add 1 cup wine and saute on med low heat 10-15 minute.
7. Meanwhile drain the potatos, mash (by hand - it tastes better) and add butter and milk to soften. Set aside.
8. Pour Meat mixture into a cassarole dish, add mashed potatos on top and cover the entire thing with cheese. Cook on 350 degrees for 30 min or until potatos look crispy.
9. Enjoy.

this is how i make personally
you will need
packet of mince, gravy, potato's , big oven proof dish
Firstly peel your potato's (amount depending on how many you are cooking for) slice the potato's into Pisces (helps to cook quicker) place in boiling water and add salt boil until potato is very soft. then drain and place back in pot to cool
then slightly fry the mince for about 2-4 Min's until mince turns light brown colour then place mince in an oven proof dish (a deep and wide dish) evenly spread mince in the dish. then mix up some packet gravy (traditional gravy) and pour over the mince (pour so all mince is covered but not to sloppy) then mash your potato up and place over the mince in the dish...... you should have more potato than mince so make sure potato take up most of the space of the dish then place in the oven for about 15 - 25 Min's on about 150 -200 c (should be golden brown when complete) leave to cool then serve
(hope i could be a help)
