I've seen the lunacy of fanatics of every single denomination on this planet be called 'the Will of God'.
The *practitioners* of the faith of Islam are peaceful, when they adhere correctly by using logic. But when you try to warp the ever-so-complicated Qur'an to satisfy your own purposes, which is easy to do... then you go from peaceful to hateful in a matter of a few sermons and a group of unfortunate people who will be willing to listen because they want 'something better'.
You can't fool all the people all of the time, but if you fool the right ones then the rest will fall behind.
Knowledge is power; power is freedom; freedom is peace.
Peace be upon you...

Islam is peaceful, but there are some Muslims who aren't; just as the teachings of Christianity are peaceful, but there are violent Christians.

I think that Mohamed (Peace Be Upon Him) intended Islam to be a religion of peace and unity. It could be argued that he felt the values that he found amongst the Bedouin such as hospitality and charity could be an example to all Arabs and eventually to all people. Through careful reading of the Qur'an and through listening to the sermons of various Imams, I personally found that the central message of Islam is this:
(This is just my own personal distillation of the central themes of Islam and the Qur'an).
1. Allah created the world and everything in it, including human beings.
2. Because human beings are all children of God they are all brothers and sisters and should unify as one human family. One of the lessons Mohamed learned from the Bedouin was the idea that the strong should protect the weak and help them to survive the harsh conditions of the desert. Mohamed believed that this ideal could be brought to humanity as whole, the strong should protect the weak, and we all need to survive the harshness of life together as one tribe or family because in the end protecting one another and helping one another makes us all stronger.
3. Fighting for social justice is one of the noblest of all goals. Struggling to protect religion is also a noble goal but the greatest goal a person can struggle towards is bringing oneself in line with God's morals and precepts. It is a hard struggle and right intention can be more important than the actual achievement.
4. The peace and unity of all mankind that is at the heart of Islam will come when man stops struggling against God and submits to God. This doesn't necessarily mean that everyone must necessarily accept Islam as a religion but rather means that remembering God in your mind, heart, and soul. It also means that we need to remember that humans are all one as Allah is one -- a unified whole.
When Mohamed died, the message of Islam became twisted and distorted by the lesser men who tried and failed to fill his leadership role. That distortion continues to this day.
The Islamic terrorists who have soiled Islam's reputation with their violence and hatred aren't true representitivess of Islam. They are fanatics who have ripped Qur'anic verses out of the context of the book and the context of the history to which the verses are referring. They twist their meaning to suit their own agenda.
Fanatics such as Osama bin Laden seek out young men with inferiority complexes, outcasts who want to fit in to some larger group. They build them up with sweet poison, they tell them over and over again that they are special and important, they fill them with false promises of a glorious afterlife, they tell them lies about their supposed enemies, and warp their minds with distorted religious language. When they are done they have created another fanatic willing to give his life for the "glorious cause".

I once answered a similar question :).
The straightforward answer is that Islam itself (as a religion with PEACEFUL and beautiful teachings) is VERY peaceful and tolerant. BUT some of its followers have twisted and misunderstood its teachings and hence go about making this beautiful and peaceful religion look like an intolerant, anti-peace religion.
May their Creator deal justly with them for doing this!
But if you want the complete answer--which also includes those Quranic verses that anti-Islamic people AND the "Muslim" terrorists use in order to justify their false view that Islam and terrorism go hand-in-hand-- then here's the link (I really, REALLY don't wanna have to paste the entire answer here!):

yes islam is a very peacful religion.
edit: piece from islamic history:
When `Umar entered Jerusalem at the head of a Muslim army in 638 CE, just six years after the Prophet's death, he entered the city on foot, as a gesture of humility in a city sacred to Muslims, Christians, and Jews. There was no bloodshed. There were no massacres or forced conversions.
On the contrary, those who wanted to leave were allowed to do so with all their possessions. Those who wanted to stay were granted protection for their lives, their property, and their places of worship. `Umar very famously declined to pray one of the five daily prayers in the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, lest in years to come Muslims might try to turn it into a mosque in his memory. Instead, `Umar cleansed the so-called Temple Mount with rose water and built a small mosque there, where the Dome of the Rock now stands.
All of this is in marked contrast to what happened when the Crusader armies later took Jerusalem. Seventy thousand men, women and children were slaughtered. Any remaining Muslims and Jews were driven out. When the city was recaptured by Salah Ad-Din (Saladin), the Christian inhabitants were granted protection and were escorted to safety by the Muslim army. But those who have a different aim would have us believe that it is Islam that is cruel.
When Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) finally entered Makkah at the head of a Muslim army in AH 8, he did so not to force the Makkans to convert, but because they had violated their peace treaty with the Muslims. The Prophet entered with great humility, ordering that there should be no fighting or bloodshed. Instead, he forgave all those who had opposed him and the growth of Islam for so many years. Those who wanted to leave were allowed to do so. The whole city, so impressed by the men they had fought against for so long, converted to Islam.
Another great example that many deliberately choose to ignore is that of the Muslim presence in southern Spain for nearly eight centuries. Described as Islam's Golden Age, this was a time when the Islamic civilization flourished. It was centuries ahead of northern Europe in the way arts and sciences were encouraged and in the way cities and towns were advanced well beyond anything in Germany, France, or England at the same time.
During this Golden Age, the rights of Christians and Jews were respected and honored, and many of them rose to high positions at court. When the Catholic monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella reconquered southern Spain, Muslims and Jews were either forced to convert to Christianity or were put to death. Mosques and synagogues were desecrated and destroyed. The excesses of the Spanish Inquisition had begun.
