Let's face it, you couldn't shoot someone if you hadn't got a gun. And don't say bow and arrow, or I'll roar.

This entire question is a logical fallacy.

You would need a military to "disband all militaries" to begin with.

Then you would need a military to ensure no one made another military force.

So basically what your talking about is a dictatorship where everyone except a select few had the ability to use force.

Sorry the whole idea of that doesnt sound that appealing to me.

Absolutely not. If all the countries in the world gave up their militaries and disbanded them, any rebel or terrorist group that wanted to could break the rules and create their own military force. Since there wouldn't be anything to counteract it, it would immediately become an unstoppable force.

There's a concept called "mutually assured destruction." It dictates that nations won't attack more powerful ones because they fear the resulting retaliation. The same concept applies to nuclear weapons. The nations that have them don't use them as weapons, but keep them because they help prevent attacks and maintain a power balance. If we build a better missile, another nation will find a way to counter it, even if they are our allies, just to make sure that we don't become omnipotent because of it.

In short, eliminating militaries would not be a wise idea.

The problem is that anyone not disbanding their military would have a power advantage. Considering the only way to really enforce such a disarmament would require military force.

It's like the difference between communism as envisioned by Marx and that bastard variant the Soviets used...

...the ideal form may have merit...

...yet to try and create it in reality requires the use of the very thing that the ideal forbids.

(That and removing military force is like removing the electoral college: you marginalize anyone not in the majority or main axes of power...)

If we disbanded the military than instantly we would attacked by other countries and without a military there would be nothing to help defend us in the struggle of power that never ceases

in theory this is infact what america is doing, per say that is. america has embarked on a journey to rid the world of nuclear weapons, forcing countries to decommission or face the consequences, when america themselves have no intention of disarming theirs, thus ensuring immense global superiority. with nobody else with any WMD'S no other country could oppose them. something that could even be called a "new world order" perhaps. before anyone assumes i am iraqi or "some muslim terrorist" as i have seen on this, i am neither american or of any other country in which they occupy.

Yes - In fact we (USA) should lead by example and disband the armed forces. That way, every other nation can do the same since we would no longer be able to conquer other nations.....

How are you going to accomplish this wondrous feat? By example? Prepare to be enslaved by those who will not disarm. Disarm everyone else by force first? Now you're the despot everyone needs to be armed against. How about if we just keep ourselves armed to keep all potential tyrants in their place?

Good idea. Lets start with disbanding the Taliban and all those Mideast terrorist militias. Work our way up from there.

Impossible. As soon as the disarming had occurred the tyrant hiding his army would wreak havoc on anything and everything.

Sure, but the US needs to be the last country to do it, after everyone else does. And who do you think will be buying all the surplus weapons?
